| azrob's Full Review: 2001 Yamaha Grizzly |
After riding a Polaris Trailblazer and being immensely impressed by its ease of operation, I decided that I wanted an ATV that was also easy to use, but powerful enough to do chores. Basicly I wanted everything in one package. I considered buying a Polaris Sportsman, but ugly rumors about Polaris reliability and our local Polaris dealer's reputation made the Grizzly look like a better choice. The feature I like best about the Grizzly is the option of switching between 2 wheel drive or 4 wheel drive. The Grizzly in general is quite poor handling (very top heavy), but its able to spin its wheels on terrain where other quads can't. It has a powerful masculine sound, and in general its a very masculine machine. I had racked up about 1,100 miles on my Grizzly when it started sputtering and stalling when put into reverse. I spend lots of time trouble shooting it replacing the reverse relay, reverse switch, and the CDI box. After much failure I decided to mention my Grizzly's problem to our Yamaha dealer. They called Yamaha, who told them to replace my ignition switch under warranty, even though my Grizzly's warranty had expired. The new ignition switch did nothing for my Grizzly, my dealer now wanted me to put my Grizzly in their shop for repair. It stayed there for 3 months and the problem was never solved. I wrote to Yamaha myself but they did nothing about my Grizzlys problem. In the end I ended up selling my Grizzly about 15 months after buying it. Now I only buy Honda, because I've been in a similar situation with Honda and Honda backed their product even though the bike was 18 years old. Yamaha is going to have to do better if they're going to compete with Honda in ATVs. Normally I'd buy the new Honda Rubicon, but as I stated I really enjoyed switching back and forth between 2 wheel drive and 4 wheel drive on the Grizzly. Oh well some day Honda will get it straight. Even so I've already switched back to owning a Honda ATV, it feels great getting in the saddle of a red Honda.
