Before I begin on the bike a little about me. I have been riding for 27 years on everything from 60cc dirt bikes to this 1800cc monster. I have ridden Hondas, Yamahas, Kawasakis, Suzukis, and Harleys. I have driven faster bikes but none that oozed testosterone as much as this bike.

I have the 2002 VTX 1800R version. This is the retro version with cast rims. I am exceedingly happy with the motorcycle there are a few things, I feel that I should point out if you are looking for a bike and are considering this one. My inseam is 30 inches and I am comfortable on this bike. I have talked with riders that have an inseam of less than 29 inches and they all complain of not being able to put their feet flat on the ground. There are several aftermarket kits to lower the bike but they are expensive and will change the drivability of the bike.
If you are short in the inseam check out the 1300 model plenty of power (after all anything over 1100 cc is all about bragging rights) and about an inch closer to the ground.
As much as I love my motorcycle be forewarned that there are several problems with the VTX. Hondaline accessories for the motorcycle are expensive and not very well constructed, mine started rusting in less than 60 days. I am still waiting (as of 7/28/03) to have them replaced under warranty. The chrome on this bike is very thin and prone to rusting.
The built in rev limiter kicks in around 5700 RPM and is a real killjoy in the lower gears until you figure out where it will start to shut off extra fuel. The rev limiter is part of the EFI unit and when the RPMs get to a certain level the EFI unit will simply stop sending more fuel to the engine. To combat this problem I bought a tach setup so I could shift up while still in the power band. The speedo only goes to 150 mph so I have no idea how fast it truely goes but I do know it is somewhere above 150. At the track it pulls the 1/4 in 12.6 at 109.77, and that is with my overweight 230lb butt sitting on it.
Now for the bad news, these things are expensive. I am talking 12,999 list price. Look around for a used one and get it for about 10,000. Want to know more about the VTX and VTX riders check out the owners group website at www.vtxoa.com and if you get one dont say I did not warn you that the chrome sucks.
