| jtilmon's Full Review: 2003 Kawasaki Vulcan 1600 Classic |
When I first saw the 1600, I was a little intimidated by its size. But when I rode it, I was amazed at how easily it handled. It is a very well balanced bike and easily navigated a parking lot where I tried its turning abilities.
The 1600 classic is a pleasure to ride. Mine was 1 year old with 1700 miles when I bought it. Another year later, I've put 5000 miles on it and I have not had a single problem.
Even with only stock equipment, the bike gets lots of looks. It is a sharp ride. The stock pipes also have a good, strong sound.
Watch out for the Alamo saddlebags. They look great on the bike at first. But as they age, the inside flaps (closest to the bike) begin to flare out. It looks not-so-good and it allows rain to get into the bag. The outside flaps have Velcro sewn into them that hold them down. I tried sticking Velcro to the inside flaps, but it did not hold. Maybe I can find someone to sew it in.
One thing I wish Kawasaki would fix is the very annoying gas cap rattle. I spoke to a technician at Kawasaki who confirmed what I had already discovered. There is a brass float inside of a valve in the cap. The float vibrates against the sides of the valve. The technician attributed the rattle to the harmonics of the bike and said a new cap would not fix it. I guess the rattle is common to most of the 1600's.
Other than the gas cap, I have no complaints about the bike. Overall, I am very pleased and expect to own it for a long time.
