| drwdavis's Full Review: 2003 Kawasaki Vulcan 500 LTD |
After nearly 25 years without a motorcycle, I have once again gotten on two wheels. "Spock" the plate on my Kawasaki Vulcan 500 reads, and I have almost convinced myself that I bought it for the gas mileage. Truth be known, I enjoy zooming about on my Vulcan 500. My brothers have larger bikes, a Yamaha 1000 Virago and a Yamaha Voyager 1100. Although my Vulcan 500 looks small next to these couches on wheels, even they were impressed with the power and comfort. My youngest brother (the one with the big 1100) was impressed in the ride and "fit" and the six speeds. He tooled around the back roads here at 70 mph and said he was envious of the big bike ride from such a small machine. The Ninja 500 engine in the cruiser frame gives this bike plenty of power and it easily cruises with the big boys at 90mph plus on the highway. I do not carry passengers, and even had the shop remove the rear pegs, so it is all a single rider needs. I must admit, however, that the 500 Vulcan was my second choice. The 800 Vulcan Drifter was sold out, and the 500 was the second best performing bike for the money. It was also $2,700 less than the Drifter. For a total $6200, I got the Bike, a 4-year warrantee, full-face helmet and riding clothes. In addition, I get 58 miles per gallon. But then, that's really why I bought it. Honest. Well, that is what my wife believes anyway.
