I bought the 2003 model of this bike from a police officer in a nearby town. The bike was 4 years old with 2800 miles on it. I had planned on buying a 2006 suzuki c50, however the local dealership in my area wasn't really interested in customer satisfaction. The big difference between this bike and the C50 is that the volusia has a carburetor and the C50 is fuel injected. Which is to say, if you are mechanically inclined and something goes wrong with the carburetor, there's a good possibility you can fix it. Also the volusia comes with a sissy bar, the stock c50 does not.

I'm 5'9, with a 30 inch inseam, and can easily flat foot the bike at a stop. The foot controls are very comfortable, although when I bought the bike I did have to manually adjust the foot shifter. The handlebars are perfectly placed for excellent use of the front brake and clutch controls. As of this date I've had the bike for about 4 months and I ride it 4-5 times a week. The bike seems very large to look at, however I have to say, it took me very little time to feel comfortable on it. The bike corners and leans very confidently, much moreso than my previous bike, a honda shadow vlx of the same year. When I first purchased the bike, I was getting some pretty horrible gas mileage, but after changing the oil I get about 40 mpg.
One thing that really bothers me about most motorcycles is the placement of the speedometer on the gas tank and you can find out why by reading my review of my previous bike. Oddly enough however, the placement of the speedometer on the volusia isn't really much of an issue. One thing I find unusual about the volusia, is the lcd display. I really hate lcd's on vehicle information panels. The problem with lcd panels, is that they go out all the time! Remember all those digital watches you had to throw away because you could no longer read them? Same issue applies here. The LCD displays odometer, two tripometers, a clock and the fuel guage. Thankfully the speedometer is analog. One cool thing about having a fuel guage, you don't have to ever worry about switching to a reserve tank when you're going 70 on the freeway!
Some people have complained that the 5th gear on this bike is not tall enough. These are the same people that would complain about a sport bike not having a 7th gear. Some people are never satisfied I suppose. I haven't had any complaints about the engine revving high, but I rarely go more than 75 miles per hour. It may also be because my last bike only had 4 gears so I'm used to riding a bike that revs high at highway speeds. One thing to consider on all bikes when reaching highway speeds is the weight of the bike and this bike is no different. Lightweight cruisers like this are extremely susceptible to turbulence. Gusty winds at highway speeds will feel as though you are going to get blown over though this bike does take them in stride.
This bike is carbureted, and because of that you will have to use the choke before the bike warms up, however, this bike warms up quickly, usually in less than 5 minutes.
I've heard people complain about the cushion of the seat on this bike. These people have obviously never ridden on a stock honda seat. The stock seat on this bike and the c50 is more than adequate in my opinion, and luxurious when compared to the seat on my honda shadow.
I've also heard people complain that the exhaust on this bike is not loud enough. I've made no modifications to the exhaust, although I've seen videos of people debaffling the exhast on this bike. Quite honestly, I love the sound of the exhaust on this bike, it's a throaty rumble, but not deafening. Considering that the stock exhaust on my shadow 600 sounded like a spaceship on the cartoon series, the jetsons, I'd say this exhaust is very loud!
All things considered, I have to give the bike a 5 star rating. This bike is extremely economical, good looking and a breeze ride. Although I've been riding it for a while, I do not feel as though I will outgrow it anytime soon. All in all, I'm extremely satisfied with this purchase.
