Despite a Host of New Balls, Pro V1's are Still the Best

Pros:Good Distance, Feel, Spin, Performance

Cons:Paying $45 per dozen still hurts...

The Bottom Line: My personal preference of golf balls (along with the x version of these).

Titleist first introduced the Pro V1's sometime around 1999, making these balls about 7 years old. Even through Titleist reconfigures the core almost every year, you could easily say that these are the longest running performance balls, and in my opinion, the best. Other balls have matched the good distance that the Pro V1 provides, but I have never used a ball that can match the short game performance or the feel for the ball.

The ball was very technologically advanced at the time of its release, and still is today. When you look at the construction of the ball, it really isn't too impressive. The ball is constructed of three layers much like all other performance balls. Whatever is in those three layers is what makes this ball special, and no other ball has been beloved by me as much as this one.

Due to the high price, many higher handicap golfers tended to stay away from the ball at first, giving the ball a reputation that it's for better players only. There is actually some truth to the assumption that the Pro V1 is for better players. The ball has a fairly high compression, meaning a slower swing speed will fail to fully compress the ball resulting in shorter distance. However, I think most golfer's swing speed is fast enough for the ball, and almost every golfer should try these out for the short game benefits they provide.

Experience

If you know anything about these balls, you will know that they are expensive. In fact, the MRSP is $58 dollars a dozen, but they retail for a little over $40 in most places. Anyway, this ball is still worth the price. The distance is good, not as good as some others such as the Pro V1x, Callaway HX Black, or Taylor Made TP Black. The distance is still very sufficient. Off the driver the ball has a little more spin than some other balls, so that contributes to the shorter distance.

Off irons the ball is again a little shorter than the irons because of the spin, but it's a trade certainly worth making. Some golfers have complained that the Pro V1 actually spins too much off short irons, but I have never had that problem. You can also work the ball very easily because of the high spin. The ball also has a nice, soft feel to it on short shots/green side chips that is appealing. The ball putts true, and also feels pretty good at the same time. The ball is cut resistant, but scuffs somewhat easily.

Final Thoughts

The Titleist Pro V1 and Pro V1x are the best balls on the market IMO. I've tried just about everything (Callaway HX series, Nike One Series, Maxfli Black Max...but have yet to use the Taylor Made TP balls), and still use the V1's over anything else. Of course it could be great if Titleist (and any other ball manufacturer) lowered the price of their golf balls, but you certainly get what you pay for.
