| wyodog's Full Review: 2005 Yamaha Majesty |
When it began to cost close to $100 to fill my truck and I started noticing scooters around town, I began to think seriously about these things. I needed something that could handle both street and highway travel and wouldn't get blasted off the road. I looked at the Burgman 400/650, the Reflex, and the Silverwing. The Majesty struck me as the best combination of performance, size, price, and looks.
Not having ridden a motorcycle in ten years, I felt immediately comfortable riding the Maj. While no crotch rocket, it has plenty of zip off the line, and the brakes are very effective. The CVT seems to make the throttle hard to finesse, especially when slowing. Rolling off the throttle slows the bike almost abruptly.
The Majesty feels substantial and pretty solid. I don't miss shifting gears, and I no longer notice the quirks peculiar to scooters. The analog speedo and tach are large and legible, but the turn signal indicators could be brighter. The digital displays however are easy to read in bright sunlight. There's a good amount of storage space: I've had no problem getting 5-6 grocery bags stowed in the main compartment. The floorboards allow a number of leg positions. Headlights are sharp and evenly distributed; high beam is superb. And the main reason for buying (or so I told myself) was for the fuel economy: 60 mpg on the first tank.
But now my real reason for buying this scooter has become the fun of riding it. I'll go out of my way just to find some more curves and twisty road to ride.
Its light weight, low center of gravity, and balance make low speed maneuvering very easy. At higher speeds the scooter feels more like a motorcycle with its stability and smoothness in spite of its small tires.
A few quibbles: the windshield is a little short (I'm 5'11); some of the plastic fittings seem a little flimsy; a rattle has already started. Ride over washboard surfaces and potholes is harsh.
I'm trying to get through the break-in period as quickly as possible so I can really enjoy this bike's potential. Can't wait to try my bike's handling at interstate speed.
