BMW X5 - The almost ultimate driving machine

Pros: Excellent ride, suspension, large gas tank, very spacious, large sun/moon roof.
Cons: CD in rear, navigation system not easy/intuitive.
The Bottom Line: Definitely purchase this vehicle and do not get the navigation system. A Garmin or other such will be a better spend.

I purchased a brand new BMW X5 in May of 2006. It brought a huge smile to my face when I went to go pick it up. My girlfriend had a relatively brand new Acura TSX so we were happy to all an SUV to the family. I love this car but am truly disappointed by the difficulty in using the navigation system. I had chosen this option b/c I was moving to a new city. It is not a touch screen or voice activated (like that in the Acuras) and as such requires that you will need pull over or work on the address before you depart (as you should do anyway). But, you are not able to quickly adjust at a traffic light either - which one should be able to do. Another drawback of the navigation system is that it takes the place of the CD player. The Acuras have a six disc CD changer with a touch screen/voice activated navigation system in the front. As such, I had to purchase a six-disc changer for the rear. An archaic tape player is however cleverly hidden behind the navigation screen. NOT VERY HELPFUL. I spent about $55K on this car and expect that it would be efficient and superior in EVERY respect. It is not. I'm actually thinking about having the navigation system removed for an in-dash CD player. The SUV however has served its purpose. I've transported people, supplies, TVs, luggage, party supplies and even moved with this vehicle and it has proven to be worth its salt while maintaining style and image. I also chose the option of having rear seat heaters and this has retained some good friendships for me in the winter. The sunroof is huge and is the largest I've seen in any vehicle.
