Re: Get a backup assist for her (Reply to this comment)
by blome
So far she isn't having any problems with the rear visibility, she's gotten used to it. Its my mom by the way, not my grandmother, :)
I have been seeing more and more 2006 Impala's on the road and in parking lots lately. Seems to be selling well.

Get a backup assist for her (Reply to this comment)
by digitalquirk
I agree with your comments on how people who would overlook an "American" car like the Impala and GM in general just for being domestic are really doing themselves a disservice. As for your grandmother, do her a favour and get her a backup assist. The type where they put sensors in the rear bumper and it sounds an alert if she's about to back into something. So many cars these days have poor rearward visability; it ought to be a standard option.

Update (Reply to this comment)

The Impala is doing very well. The A/C is working great and is very quiet during this heat wave.
No problems to report. I have been driving the car for 2 weeks myself and I enjoyed driving it.

Re: More? (Reply to this comment)

Thank you.
To be honest she only looked at 3 cars-the Impala she ended up buying (by the way she is now used to the poor rear visibility luckily!), a 2005 Buick Century (which she just sat in and didn't like the look of the dash) and a Buick LaCrosse (which I preferred but she felt the dash was too confusing).
Basically the only one she drove was the Impala.
I will be in the market for a car later this year and I will test drive many cars. I will be sure to give them all reviews here.

More? (Reply to this comment)

A very good review considering you've only written three. Any chance you might review some of the other cars you and your mother considered? You have a unique perspective given the intended driver that would be very helpful to an underserved segment.

Re: Just made it (Reply to this comment)

I would say the seats are comfortable even though I prefer bucket seats. These are the 60/40 bench seats. They are adjustable 6 ways including height and lumbar support.
The trunk is huge, able to swallow a lot of luggage, however a flaw in the design allows water to drip into the trunk when open if it has been raining out. My car does the same thing, I wonder if it happens to all cars?
Gas mileage I could not estimate at this time as she hasn't even gone through a tankful of gas yet.
The controls are excellent, very nice to the touch, especially the HVAC controls which are very smooth.
The brakes are a strong point on the car, smooth and powerful without being overassisted which with my heavy foot sometimes makes me jerk cars to a halt.
I must emphasize its weak points a little more though. The rear visibility is atrocious. The rear window not only is small but it angles completely downward. Very poor design for visibility but I'm sure it helps it to look good from the outside. However, I would much prefer to give up some looks in order to see better out the rear. My mother is uneasy about this also but otherwise loves the car. The view forward is excellent since the seats are high up and the hood slopes downward a bit.
I will add these comments to my review, thanks. Any other questions let me know.

Just made it (Reply to this comment)

This is a decent review and it just made it to a "Very Helpful" rating for me. However, it left me wondering about more of your opinions on this car, including your thoughts on its brakes, seat comfort, gas mileage, controls and trunk space. What you have here is okay but it could be better with a few more of your opinions.
Anyway, thanks for sharing.
