Biodiesel & A Green Perspective (Reply to this comment)
by landospa
The reviewer makes a good point about the high cost of regular diesel not being enough to offset the better mileage.

However, it is worth noting that the Jeep CRD will run happily on "biodiesel" - a soy-based fuel already available at some enlightened gas stations around the country. I say "happily," because I've read that the Jeep CRDs leave the factory with a tankful of biodiesel.

Without going into all the benefits and alternative forms, suffice it to say that biodiesel enables private, modern transportation with reduced or possibly no fossil fuel consumption. Isn't that awesome?

Some of my sister's friends have gone the biodiesel route. Apparently the car takes on a different smell depending on which fast food chain the fuel is acquired from.

Anyone know how many cars might be powered by the nation's french fry oil?

Thanks for the compliment on the review.

You might try reading more carefully. All of the services at my site are free to those who participate in the research. I'm not angling for a fee. The fee is there for those who expect everyone else to participate while they do nothing--but still expect to benefit from the results. Think of it as a "freeloader tax" that I have no interest in collecting.

The site was created to provide information people shopping for a car want but that cannot be practically provided within my reviews.

Spelling errors and run-on sentences made it difficult to follow. There are also some comments that do not give a true picture of the CRD and Diesel in general. The comment about diesel prices being at an amount that does not justify the purchase is just plain wrong. With at least 25% better fuel economy, a Diesel would break even with a Gas Liberty even if RUG (Regular Unleaded Gas) was $3.00 per gallon and ULSD (Ultra Low Sulphur Diesel) was $3.75 per gallon. Also Diesel tends to be cheaper than gas at least 6 months of the year toward the summer months. The point about the CRD costing $900.00 more is a little misleading. The extra $900.00 includes the Diesel...AND...Selec-Trac transfercase, Upgraded Wheels and Fog Lights. Real World mileage for the CRD on the highway can easily be 30 cruising at 68 mph. Hybrids get better mileage in the city but are not much better highway. I am all for Hybrids and I think a Hybrid Diesel would be great to own. As for no limited slip in the CRD, the factory "Traction Control" acts better than the Trac-Loc Limited Slip offered in previous year model Jeep Libertys. One other major point is the fact that the CRD is rated to tow 5,000 pounds. There are no other mid-size SUVs that are rated that high. As for the driving characteristics, the CRD is great in city driving because of the 295#s of torque at 1,800 rpm and excellent on the highway with two overdrives for fuel mileage. The CRD does not "hunt" for gears when cruising at highway speeds...it just pulls along while getting great mileage.

As stated in the review, the $900 is after adjusting for equipment differences. The diesel option was priced at $1,745 on the Sport and $1,360 on the Liberty.

Also as stated in the review, diesel at the time was 60 cents to a gallon more than gas. This could easily average out to the 75 cents you grant would wide out the economy advantage.

I'll go hunt down the typos later today.

I do see where you stipulate that the $900 was the real difference between the Gas and Diesel versions. As for fuel costs, I am sure that they vary widely in different markets. Here is Texas, they are usually within 10% or less of each other. That means at 19,000 miles the Diesel Option pays for itself compared to the Gas Liberty.

The Ford Escape Hybrid does get about 7mpg better city and 5mpg highway based on the newer EPA system. I will say that the highway mpg for the CRD is closer to the Hybrid than that. Here is the link to the new EPA ratings scale. It will let you see the adjusted MPG ratings for most all vehicles.

Note that I wrote this review in November 2005. I haven't monitored diesel prices since then. I suppose I should modify that section of the review, though.
