LINCOLN'S NEW CARS (Reply to this comment)

Good review. I personally like the Zephyr's styling alot. Have you seen the new MKS? That thing looks absolutely sick.
After testing the NAvigator for 2007, I'm waiting to get my hands on MKX, MKS and MKZ.

I completely agree with your pros and cons. The poor comfort and the bad crash results on the Ford Fusion (which its based) really killed this car for me :(

I'd do the same if I reviewed the Lexus ES. Whenever a luxury model is based on a mainstream model, it must be asked if the results are worthy of the luxury brand. The good news for Lincoln is that I didn't find the result merely a Mazda wearing Lincoln badges.

Is the review for a Lincoln or Mazda? (Reply to this comment)

I have no quarrel with the reviewer's observations of the Zephyr, but the reader is reminded ten separate times that the Zephyr is based on the Mazda6. You would think Lincoln had revolutionized auto manufacturing by using one chassis as the basis for another model.

I fully agree on both points.

Inexcusable? (Reply to this comment)
by jakemj8402
Michael,

Is it just me or is it inexcusable that a car in this price range doesn't have stability control as even an option? Given the price gap between the Zephyr and the ES330/TL, do you think the latter will come out as cheaper than the Lincoln due to the generally much higher resale value (note the resale value of the Lincoln LS, which is truly awful)? Thanks.

Thanks! I know the LS is being phased out next year. I'll have to consider that factor. And Ford has a new, more powerful engine coming down the pipeline with a new six-speed(?) transmission. Most like the Zephyr (and a slew of Ford vehicles) will be getting both.

The LS's appearance is less distinctive than the Zephyr, but it feels more solid and handles better. I think they feel about the same size. I don't think either one is a good bet as a new car, as Lincolns lose value very rapidly. The Zephyr will likely be more reliable.

LS versus Zephyr (Reply to this comment)

Michael, what's your opinion between the LS and the Zephyr? I like the latter's power (especially the V8 engine which, apparently, takes regular) and sophisticated styling which won't look odd when I'm in my forties (here's looking at you, Mitsubishi Lancer and Evolution) or standout (the wrong way) among my peers Bimmers and Lexuses.

But the Zephyr, both interior and exterior, looks more interesting despite the "weaker" engine. And did it feel smaller than the LS? Stats indicate it's slightly smaller. But when I sat in it at the California Auto Show, though, it didn't feel significantly so.
