Does show avg. mpg (Reply to this comment)

Great review-very thorough. I don't know about the base hybrid, but the Limited AWD version DOES display average mpg WITHOUT the nav system. There's an info button above the fantastic 6 disc JBL stereo that toggles between outside temp, inside temp setting, current mpg (last two seconds), and avg. mpg, which can be reset for each tank of gas. I didn't think it had it either and like mkaresh said, that's goes hand in hand with buying one of these vehicles. Finishing my second tank of gas & getting 26.5 mpg.

The Highlander offers more, but it's also considerably more expensive. Enjoy the Escape. If you haven't already, I hope you'll write your own review.

Very helpful review (Reply to this comment)

I'm prejudiced as I have already bought my Escape Hybrid but I am glad to see this review nonetheless. In my estimation all manufacturers will move to this technology within the next five years or less. Diesels are not where the future is.
I think far too much emphasis is given to the cost benefit analysis. Everytime one drives one of these hybrids there is a psychological benefit when one realizes that you won't be bled dry to fill your gas tank. I know I certainly feel that way about my Escape. And as far as drivability I don't believe that a true hybrid gives up any drivability; in fact I believe it is enhanced.
