Pros: Gas mileage, pickup, size, quality build.
Cons: Skipping Cd's, easily marred interier, armrest too short.
I am the proud new owner of a 2007 Honda Accord Lx Sedan in Graphite Pearl. I have been car shopping since January and have run the gamut of Honda (Civic initially), Subaru (Legacy or Outback), VW (Jetta or Bug convertable), Ford (Taurus) and Toyota (Corolla or Camry) I have, at times, been certain about buying another car to replace my 2001 VW Jetta but always decided not to for one reason or another. Now that I have purchased my Accord I think that I made a good choice to not purchase those other cars.
I was looking for a high mileage, quality built car that got good gas mileage and hopefully was not too expensive to maintain. My Jetta had been a good car for the most part but was at 115K miles and was getting very expensive to maintain and had never had all that great of gas mileage. It was also small.
I wandered back onto the Honda car lot after a period of 6 months to see what they still had available. I had initially looked at a Civic but the full price mentality of the Honda Dealer turned me off. They still are not discounting Civics but they are discounting Accords. All total they discounted my Accord around $3800 off MSRP, gave me 6.29% financing (better then my credit union) and a decent value for my trade. This put the cost difference between a 4 cyl Accord and a Civic at about $700 and in my view the Accord is so much more car (and while not huge it is much bigger) My one complaint is the color choices offered. If you are shopping for a 4 cyl LX your color choices are limited to white, black, light silver, dark grey and greyish blue) All quite boring. The Graphite pearl at least looks imposing and stylish so I chose it. It is wonderful when clean but shows dirt pretty fast.
The LX Sedan is quite basic. It sports power windows, mirrors and locks, A decent stereo with 6 speakers and single CD player and cruise control. Since I normally don't like alot of options on my cars (more to break) I was happy with this. It gets good mileage 24/34. It does not have any type of fancy wheels (wheels with hubcaps). It does, however, sport the full complement of Honda safety features. This is what made me decide between a Honda and a Toyota. With a Toyota you have to go with a higher end car to get all the safety features. With a Honda, even the most basic has all the features offered as far as air bags are concerned and standard ABS.
I am not gonna get into alot of technical stuff in this review. Several other reviewers already have and a person will no doubt read those reviews as well. So I am gonna focus on the experience of owning this car.
The car was not perfect when picked up at the dealer. I will have to take it back to have a few things tweaked which surprised me - considering Hondas legendary quality control. I am not sure if the dealership was in a hurry or what. I did receive a call from Honda and they asked me if I had any problems. I gave the dealer 5 stars for everything but said it had a problem with a lock not being the right one. This will be fixed. Also one of the hubcaps is not right and I will have to bring that to their attention.
The car has dark grey cloth seats. I am already noticing some pilling and dust accumulates quite readily. But the interier looks really nice and I keep a supply of Armorall clothes to wipe it down and keep it fresh looking. I also wish the floor mats on the drivers side protected more of the carpet - I already have stains on the unprotected carpet.
The car has very comfy seats and I am a large person who fits easily into them. No seat belt extender required, etc. The arm rest doubles as a misc. holder and I like this but it is so far back that I cant use it as an armrest. It does slide forward but not far enough for me. Their are other holders for drinks and CD's and they are handy. Their is a sunglass holder that is nice but on a hot day if you get your sunglasses out of it they will be pretty hot. There are two power jacks in the front. I like the sound of the radio and all the controls are easy to use. I do find that the CD player skips sometimes. This may be due to the CD's I am using but they play fine in other players.
The car has tinted windows and this is a really nice feature. It keeps the car much cooler and me more comfortable.
The car rides extremely well and even tho it is only 4 cyl it has quite alot of pick up. This is not affected by the air conditioning (like it is in the Civic) This car has alot more oomph then a Civic. The air conditioning does not seem to be very cold at first. You must use the MAX Air setting to get the full benefit - that will refrigerate you good though.
All in all I am very happy with this car. It is an excellent value (especially right now with the Honda clearence going on) I recommend it to anyone looking for a good, basic car that will get them from point A to point B in comfort, style and above all - safety!
