I have had my Jeep Compass for about 6 months. I wanted to give it a fair chance before writing a review. I have the 2.4L engine with 4 wheel drive on demand. I got the Compass because I have two German Shepherds and they didn't fit in my fusion. So I needed something that could carry them without going to a full sized SUV or to a family van.
I was really impressed with the roominess in the Compass my husband is over 6 foot and is very comfortable in the back seat. One small drawback is the 60/40 back seat if you are large the smaller side is a bit cramped. It's fine for the leg room but the width can be a problem. The ride was much quieter and smoother than my Ford Fusion. I have the cloth interior with the stain guard which is well worth the money. I got a new puppy which got car sick the first few rides and the interior cleaned up wonderfully with no left over odor or signs of anything happening. The rest of the trim is plastic and no match for my dog's claws.
The Compass handles well in rain and snow. The cornering is a bit testy on sharp corners with the higher center of gravity. This CRV is not meant for off roading with only the on demand 4 wheel drive. But for winter driving it Pennsylvania it's great.
One major drawback in my opinion is the combination of the engine and the transmission. The Compass is geared so low that acceleration is very poor. It's great when you need the 4 wheel drive but is terrible when trying to get on the interstate highway. I would describe it as slow and lumbered at best. Jeep either needs to give it a larger engine or change the gear ratio. There has to be a happy medium.
The biggest plus for the Compass is the economy. I have been getting 27 mpg on the highway and around 25mpg in town. For that Im very happy especially with gas prices rising.
Overall I really like my compass. Is it the best car Jeep has made no but this being the first year out I'm sure we will see improvements as they get more of them out there and get feedback.
