Thanks.

What many people don't realize is that you have decent odds of zero or few problems with just about any car these days. By reporting absolute rather than relative problem rates, TrueDelta will make this clearer.

Kia Reliability (Reply to this comment)

I can't speak for the Rondo, but I've had incredible luck with my wife's 2003 Spectra. We bought it new and the only time it has been in the shop was for a new bumper and some minor body work after an accident. It survived an encounter with another car and an 18-wheeler and still drives like new, so I guess that says something about both the safety and reliability.

I know quite a few people with 150k+ miles on their Kia with no problem, also. And with that warranty, it's worth a chance, anyway.

I just bought a new car or else I'd probably be all over this one. I love Kia vehicles, despite the general attitude toward them. Anyway, great review, as usual.

Yes, that's the way it used to be. But the new Optima is based on the Elantra and is a little smaller than the current Sonata.

Kia describes the Rondo as based on the Optima platform.

The Optima is on the Elantra platform now, so I suspect this is as well. Don't really know, though.

This may have changed with the current generation, but used to be that Elantra/Spectra, and Sonata/Optima shared platforms - right?

Whoops, I did mean the FreeSTYLE. The SUV-looking thing. :-)

The Optima's handling isn't bad. Still, I was surprised that Motor Trend made it a COTY finalist. I'm not crazy about that award, but making the Optima a finalist when they didn't include such cars as the SKY Redline says something.

I'm confused... (Reply to this comment)

I just finished poking around this vehicle at the LA Auto Show, and while it looks like a thoroughly competent package, the Rondo has slightly shaken my faith in Hyundai/Kia's brand management.

After driving the Sportage, Spectra5, and Rio5, I was plenty willing to see Kia as the "sporty" arm of HAG. Starchier steering and suspension, darker and edgier interior trim, both still well within the tastes of mainstream buyers--seemed like a solid business plan for differentiating Hyundai and Kia.

I wrote off the new Optima as an isolated anomaly, with a V6 that makes significantly less power than the Sonata's. It did, after all, have crisper styling and the requisite dark interior. But the Rondo has me very confused. It's not even vaguely sporty to look at or sit in, and from the sound of things, there's not much sporty flavor in the driving experience, either.

Shouldn't they have badged this thing a Hyundai? Or does HAG have something else in mind for that brand's compact crossover slot?

Do you mean the Freestar or the Freestyle? If I was going to go with something BIG, the Freestyle crossover would be at or near the top of my list. I don't care for the Freestar minivan nearly as much.

The Optima is on the Elantra platform now, so I suspect this is as well. Don't really know, though.

I have a hard time writing a review on a car I don't own, but you've done a great job of it!

You might try the Ford Freestar for 2-3-2 seating - I did test drive it and it was very nice. Around $23-25k, if I remember correctly.
