I have to agree with jcarvers 100%. The list of problems with my 2007 V6 Camry is too long to list here.
The first problem was check engine lights when I first got it. After several returns to the service department they had to remove the manifolds and hack into the wiring harness to fix several "bad connections". With 100 miles on it. Not a good start.
Next, the transmission has be AWFUL since the day I bought it. It occasionally goes into neutral when I'm in Drive. Instead of shifting smoothly it revs and clunks into gear. Sometimes it won't shift at all and appears to be stuck in one gear (it is definitely in Drive). I brought it to 3 different dealers who really didn't want to deal with it. Each time I was told that they couldn't find any problem. One service consultant took a ride with me and witnessed it misbehaving. He responded by saying that it was normal and his Camry does that too. What??? When I pressed him he said that the car was not warmed up properly. He said "you should ALWAYS warm the car up for 10 minutes before driving". I couldn't believe it. I called Toyota 3 times about the transmission problems and was assured each time that someone would call me back within 24 hours. No one ever called. Toyota doesn't care.
Besides the transmission the car squeeks and rattles all over, especially the dash. There are at least 5 places on the dash that rattle, creak and squeek. The seats and brakes squeek like crazy.
Among many poor designs are the "automatic" headlights and dash lights. In twilight the headlights constantly come on and off. There apparently is no time delay. As I pass under overpasses the lights come on and when I come out they dim again. On a 5 mile stretch on my way home the other day I counted 23 times the lights came on and off.
At least you can force the headlights into "on". Not so with the dash lights. They also dim and brighten constantly in twilight. You can force them on by setting the dimmer to the brightest position but they still blink as the car tries to dim them. There should be a 1 or 2 minute time delay before they toggle. Rotten design.
I could go on but you get the idea. Other design problems: no door guards, my arm rest is already visibly warn since it is covered with cheap fabric, a change drawer that is impossible to use without spilling change on the floor. Stupid things but it makes you wonder if anyone actually drove this car for a while when it was designed.
The most distressing thing is that I bought this car for my 16 year old daughter to learn to drive in. That is impossible. The transmission is just too erratic and my daughter is already afraid of the car. This is my first Toyota and it was a huge mistake that I'll never repeat.
The 3 Toyota dealer and Toyota customer service should be ashamed of themselves.
Lessons learned:
1. NEVER buy a car in the first year of a new model.
2. Buy a Honda. Our Odyssey is awesome and has had 0 problems.
