2007 Toyota Camry unstable at highway speeds

by nomoretoyota: Written: Dec 15 '07

Product Rating: 2.0 Recommended: No

Pros: Roomy, nice interior comfortable seating engine heats quickly along with the heater in winter
Cons: Unstable at speed, poor gas mileage, strange transmission shift pattern along with overzealous automatic downshifting
The Bottom Line: Would not buy it based on stability of handling, relatively poor gas mileage for class and strange transmission behavior

I've had the Camry now for a year and back to the dealer a few times for a tendency to pull left and for what can best be described as an uneasy feel at highway speeds. At speeds in excess of 50 mph the car continuously shimmies left and right in small and quick movements giving the impression of a very unstable ride. As you drive along you rock side to side. The faster the speed the more noticeable the movement and the more unstable the handling, sometimes requiring a quick jerk of the wheel to put the car back on track, especially around curves. A coworker has a Camry and took delivery of her Camry at around the same time and has experienced the same type of rocking motion. The movement is a bit perplexing as there is virtually no movement in the steering wheel but if the steering wheel is held very lightly you can feel slight movement that corresponds to the shimmy. Looking at the steering linkage my guess is that there are too many joints in the steering mechanism as the Camry certainly has a somewhat complicated steering system with a few linkages at right angles as it works its way to the wheels. The transmission also needs to be rethought both the manner in which it automatically downshifts when you are not accelerating and the way the shifting pattern is set up - too complex, its not a manual and should not try to pretend to be one. The other major disappointment is the gas mileage which is very weak, it only gets around 24 mpg with 99% on the highway with the 4 cylinder carrying just me while my 6,000 pound Tahoe V8 @ 325 hp gets better than 18 on the highway fully loaded hauling a family of 6 and gear. I would have expected at least double the gas mileage and shocked it was only 30% better. The Tahoe with the Z71 suspension handles a lot better than the Camry too. Come to think of it our Ford Windstar with the big V6 fully loaded gets better than 26 mpg on the highway, also handles much better too. Getting past the unstable feeling at highway speeds, poor gas mileage and quircky transmission, it actually looks fairly nice. Spacious, well thought out buttons and storage, comfortable seating, unlike the Accord which I had to get rid of because of the seating. The engine is peppy enough although a little slow to get going but once it does it holds its own.
