Pros: Rides good and looks good. sets good. lite enough for me.
Cons: Irritating; engine misfire, windshield turbulence, transmission noise, customer service. Overall an irritating experience.
Irritating is the best word to describe this experience without resorting to curse words. For the price this is a nice/irritating motorcycle but If I had it to do over I would not buy it and definitely not buy the Tourer model which comes with a windshield, luggage bags and a passenger back rest. Currently I'm replacing the windshield and removing the passenger back rest so I can install a trunk. I think the irritating clutch noise isn't a big problem because I've only seen one complaint about clutch failure. The price is good for the plain model and this is almost a good motorcycle excluding the irritating exceptions mentioned. Worst of all the engine misfiring will jerk your head about during low speed riding. It's very irritating.
In my opinion many people presenting their-self as a consumer/owner on many motorcycle forums, etc are posting comments for the purpose of promoting the sale of motorcycles and are likely working for company's selling motorcycles or related revenue such as advertising. Also these people discredit poster's experience, intelligence and mental stability when problems with their motorcycles are mentioned. This is very irritating.
THE FACTS ARE;
1) Polls indicate 1/3 of the participating v star 1300 owners have a problem with the engine surging/misfire which is very irritating.
UPDATE; 02/22/08, I DESIGNED AND BUILT A FUEL MANAGEMENT SYSTEM THAT STOPPED THE ENGINE SURGE/MISFIRING PROBLEM.
2) It has been extremely difficult to get Yamaha personnel to admit the engine has a surge problem or work on my motorcycle. When I told the Yamaha customer service guy my engine surged/misfired when I rode through the park he said "Don't ride through the park". This was very irritating.
3) The windshield is terrible and even with lowers it must be tilted back to reduce the turbulence behind the
windshield. This is very irritating. A refund on the windshield was refused the same day I bought it. This was very irritating.
UPDATE; 02/22/08, WITH LOWERS AND THE STOCK WINDSHIELD TILTED BACK I DON'T HAVE A TURBULENCE PROBLEM BUT THE BOTTOM OF THE WINDSHIELD IS IN THE WAY OF INSTALLING A LIGHT BAR.
4) Polls indicate 60% of the 60 owners participating hear noise coming from the clutch.
UPDATE; 02/22/08, 8,000 MILES ON HER NOW AND STILL NO PROBLEM WITH THE CLUTCH ALTHOUGH I DO HEAR SOME IRRITATING NOISE FROM THAT AREA. I DON'T THINK THIS IS A PROBLEM.
6)The handle bars are too short for most riders. One must lean forward. On long rides my neck and arms ached. This was very irritating so I made a bracket to move the handlebars back and up.
8) The front brake doesn't have enough stopping power but the 2008 model has larger front disk. I now have the habit of using both front and rear brakes together so this isn't a big problem for me on my 2007 models.
My motorcycle is currently in the shop to repair the engine misfire. I hope it gets repaired. Who knows? (This motorcycle was in 3 different Yamaha shops for about a month. They never fixed the misfire problem and denied the problem existed. They did not document the bike was in their shop to avoid providing me with evidence should I take them to court using the lemon law. The lemon law requires that I prove the motorcycle was in their shop many times and I've exhausted all means to get Yamaha to fix the motorcycle. I needed proof the bike was in their shops but they would not document this so if you find yourself in this situation use a camera and witnesses for proof)
UPDATE; 02/22/08, YAMAHA DID NOT FIX IT BUT I DID WITH MY FUEL MANAGEMENT SYSTEM. THIS WAS VERY IRRITATING. IT TOOK ME SEVERAL IRRITATING MONTHS TO FIND THE CAUSE OF THE MISFIRE AND FIND A WAY TO STOP IT. THIS WAS VERY IRRITATING.
AS FAR AS I KNOW THE FUEL MANAGEMENT SYSTEM I DESIGNED TO CORRECT THE MISFIRE PROBLEM IS THE ONLY FUEL MANAGEMENT SYSTEM THAT WORKS RIGHT BUT IT'S NOT ON THE MARKET. SOME VENDORS ARE SELLING FUEL MANAGEMENT SYSTEMS DESIGNED FOR OLDER MODEL MOTORCYCLES THAT DID NOT HAVE OXYGEN SENSORS. I WASTED MY TIME AND $700 ON THE POWER COMMANDER PC111USB WHICH DID NOT STOP THE ENGINE MISFIRE PROBLEM. THIS WAS VERY IRRITATING EXPERIENCE ALSO.
I think it is a mistake for Yamaha management to ruin an otherwise good reputation with the irritating business practice I've experienced.
