Currently a version of this car, really a Holden Commodore made not far from where I live in Adelaide South Australia, is now being sold also in the UK (called a Vauxhall there!) and various other countries (sometimes called a Chev)- it is a much updated version with the same engine but supercharged and the six speed manual is close in performance to an Australian V8 Supercar - hence often called a "Bathurst", an iconic 1,000k (600 mile) race here.

In that form the car is easilly capable of well over 300kph (about 200 mph) but in Australia is speed limited to 250kph (about 160mph).

Currently Holden are marketing a purpose built police car based on this vehicle and some states in the USA are likely customers along with several other countries.

Holden Commodores are built in a wide variety of configurations here and are the biggest selling vehicle in Australia.

Well, such things are subjective.

Have you considered writing your own review?

Comment problem with comparisons with BMW (Reply to this comment)
by fcsuper
Your statement was, "BMW has the interior and feel of a more expensive car"

I would challenge this statement without reservation. BMW interior (like most European cars) has a primitive interior when compared to Japanese and American cars for much less money. Even the BMW M series do not match up without significantly more $$$ thrown at the dealer for the additional upgrades. With my G8 GT (and even in my old Acura TL), I got/get complements from jealous BMW owners regarding the interior.

There's a few other statements you made that I'd question too, but overall, your review is fair.

the latest news (Reply to this comment)

here in Adelaide, South Australia, where the Pontiac GR8 is made, is that it is definitely being discontinued. The Pontiac GTO also made here was cancelled about a year ago.

In both cases this was due to poor sales of only about 20,000 per year.

I think the trouble was it being built for the US market alone - other vehicles built here by Holden, the Australian arm of GM, are, considering the times, quite successful at least partly because they are exported to many countries. (The Holden factory can produce about 1,000 cars a day plus about 300,000 v6 engines - currently only working at about 50% capacity).

Pontiac GR8's are essentially Holden Commodores, the most popular single car in Australia - however the majority are sold with a V6 engine. The Pontiac GTO was a Holden Monaro

How's that for useless information!

They're definitely going to discontinue the G8. It also sounds like they're killing the Vibe, though I can't see why they would.

From a recent announcement, looks like Pontiac (and Saturn) are on the way out. Let's hope some of the rebadge units like the G8 and the Vibe are able to stick around under another name.

I drove the CTS-V a few years back, and found too many rough edges. Compared to the first-gen CTS-V, this is a more livable car, with a better shifter.

I was smitten when I drove the Cadillac CTS-V a few years back, and imagine that this car is awfully similar in character (and surely better in details).

Hope I get the chance to drive one before the Pontiac brand goes belly-up.

I'm not sure how easy it is to find one with a manual transmission. Figures that when GM offers a really strong product, they wouldn't make many of them.

I'm tempted, and will now have to take this out. I know if you say its so fast its scary, then it must be a helluva adrenaline rush! Thanks for letting me know about what to take out for a spin,

Mike
