The Saturn Aura, as a whole, is a decent car. We were told by the dealer that it is the same as the Chevy Malibu, also a fine car.
In hybrid mode, you probably won't buy this car, however. The hybrid tech adds about $5000 to the cost of the car and for that you get only about 2 mpg more than the 4 cylinder gas model.
Whatever your reason for buying a hybrid - eco-friendly or increased gas mileage - you aren't getting much of either with this car.
As you drive it, they hybrid components are largely unnoticeable, until you take your foot off the gas. The car lurches slightly, and feel as it is going into overdrive a little bit. At this time a little green "eco" light goes on, telling you that your are now driving economically or ecologically friendly.
The rest of the time, that light is off. This leads me to believe that the hybrid tech is not meant to work in a "shared" mode. In other words, the hybrid kicks in when the engine doesn't need any power instead of assisting the gas engine to maximize mileage.
The dealer actively discouraged us from even trying the hybrid, and I can see why. Still, we own a hybrid from a different manufacturer and thought we'd see what the American car-makers were offering. As you can tell, we were disappointed. It's almost as if these cars were made to discourage hybrid purchasers so that the manufacturer could tell the world that it made hybrids but no one wanted them.
I want a hybrid and the gas mileage that goes with it!
The interior of the car is fine. It has ample room, although it claims seating for 5, it is better for 4 adults. There's enough legroom although the back can be a bit cramped for larger adults.
Trunk space is limited by the hybrid batteries.
Pickup is not that good, but it's sufficient. Handling is nice and the car is relatively quiet (though not as quiet as some of the other hybrids on the market where the engine turns off when not needed).
Controls are well-lit and easy to find. I was surpised by little things like not having electric start and the two-toned leather is not my taste, but it can be cool to have black and red leather in the car!
In sum, I don't find much reason to buy this car in the hybrid version as the gas model is many thousands less and you do not get any appreciable gain in mpg by purchasing the hybrid.
