Scotts Classic Push Mower --- Looking out for the environment and getting some exercise

Pros:works great at cutting grass, easy to assemble, easy to use, adjustable heights

Cons:none really

The Bottom Line: The mower has really worked well, and I highly recommend it as a selection for those looking to move away from gas-powered mowers, or for something that works great.

After having used gas-powered lawn mowers for some time, the Scotts Classic Push Mower is my first venture in the human-powered realm of mowers. During an afternoon of trying to get my pull-start mower working, dealing with the gas and the oil, and having it conk out on my in a thick patch of grass, I started thinking to myself that I wanted a new lawn mower. I also thought that I would like to have a push mower that didn't have a pull-start, didn't take gas, and wasn't a pain to work with if the engine wasn't working properly. That was when I decided I wanted to go a new route, and coupled with the thought that I could get a little more exercise if I got a push mower, I went to Ace Hardware to look at their selection of new lawn mowers. I came away with what I thought looked to be a good 20 inch mower made by Scotts, purchased it, and headed home to assemble it and put it to use right away.

A mower was relatively easy to assemble out of the box, with the major components needing to be attached being the handles, the connectors to the handles, and the grips that attach to the handles. It didn't take more than 20 or so minutes to get it all set-up, and the pieces fit together without needing any tools to do the job. It was a piece of cake in my opinion once I figured out which direction everything went, and while the directions were basically useless, taking a keen look at the big picture on the box helped out a lot. The blade assembly is already ready to go, so you don't have to worry about any really difficult pieces to put together, and you don't have to worry about hurting yourself either. When you are done, you have a mower that is about 26 inches in depth, 45 inches from the mower up to the handle that you grip, and is about 15 inches wide at the base of the mower. The weight might made it difficult to life for some (coming in at 34 pounds), but the wheels make it maneuverable around the yard.

The mower works by having two sets of wheels (like in the picture), and when the wheels turn forward, the blades in the mower spring to life. The faster the wheels go, the faster the blades churn, and when you go over your grass, the blades cut the pieces of grass. When you pull the mower in reverse, the wheels turn the opposite direction, and the blades to not run, so it gives you some freedom when maneuvering the mower. On the side of the main assembly are adjustable pieces that let you change how high the blades are from the ground. It lets you decide how high you want to cut the grass, and can be adjusted from 1 inch up to 3 inches, depending on what you are looking for. The width of the cutting path is about 20 inches total, and that gives you plenty of area with which to move the mower around in your yard. As the blades chop up the grass, the cut blades come up from the back and sit on a little ledge of the mower before falling back on your yard. You could probably use that ledge to contain the grass for a while if you want to place it at the end of your yard.

While in use, the mower does a pretty good job at cutting the grass, but there will be a blade or two of grass that slips through, and it may cause you to have to go over an area a second time. That's no problem though, because it gives you a nice clean cut each time, and actually looks a little better than when I used the gas-powered mower. One thing I should also mention, is that this Scotts Mower does not work on weeds. Because some weeds are so flimsy and can just be pushed over by the blades, they will spring back up once you have rolled over them. It's not that much of a hassle though, because you can than go back and pull them like you should anyways. The Scotts Classic Push Mower has been working great for us, and not only does it save the expense of buying gas or maintaining a gas-powered motor, but it affords you a little more exercise when mowing the yard. Even though there is a little resistance, it is still very easy to push, and I don't think anyone would have a problem using it. I have had a great experience with the mower, love the nice foam grip on the handles, and have really been enjoying working with a mower that cuts like this. It is easy to clean when you are done with the yard, and it also comes with a 3-year guarantee that the parts are going to keep pace with your use. I would also store it inside the garage or shed though, just to be on the safe side, but I have been very happy with everything this mower has given me. I purchased this one for around $129.00, and find that it has been well worth the purchase. I highly recommend this Classic version of the Scotts Push Mower, and I think that I may have been converted for life.
