Why I tried the Scotts Classic Reel Mower
Recommend this product?
I acquired a Scotts Classic Reel Mower from my son who bought it for his lawn and then decided it was too much work so he purchased a gas powered mower. I normally use a John Deere Walk Behind Mower but due to my not being very good at Lawn Mower Maintenance it pooped out yesterday half way through cutting my lawn. I had done the front lawn and the sides plus the perimeter around the back yard so I just had the back yard left to do so I decided to try the reel mower to finish it up.
How it works
The Scotts Classic Reel Mower works by a rotating blade that cuts against a metal edge as the blade passes over it. It works totally on man (woman) power. There is another set of wheels behind the reel that will steady the mower and allow you to let it sit in the upright position without the handle falling to the ground.
The mower will only cut when going forward, when you back it up it just rolls. The handle can be flipped forward or backward so that you can use it by pushing or pulling. When you want to move the mower to another location without cutting just go the opposite way of the cutting direction and it will move easily. You can also move it by pushing or pulling so long as the reel is moving in the non cutting direction.
How easy it is to use
The Scotts Reel Mower is a challenging work out. If you plan to use it long term I would suggest cutting every 3 days max, otherwise it is too hard to push and you will not get a nice even cut. To mow you just push. If you are only cutting an inch or so it is not too bad to push but still a lot more than a walk behind or power push mower. The less you have to cut the easier it is to push because it is your pushing that cuts the grass and long grass will bog down the blade and make it harder to push.
Corners were easy to take with the Scotts Reel Mower. I think it was actually easier to take the corners with the Scotts Reel Mower than it is with my walk behind. It goes around my beds nicely and cuts a nice even edge. It is also less disruptive of the mulch in the beds than the wheels of my walk behind.
See the "good" and "bad" for more details
The Scotts Classic Reel Mower has 9 height adjustments that raise and lower the mower from 1-3" The mower setting is only one lever that raises both wheels and the markings are clear as to which is lower and which is higher.
The Scotts Classic Reel mower requires no gas and is inexpensive. It can also provide a good work out. It cuts to a nice even length. The mower does not take up a lot of space and could even be hung from the wall in your garage. The handle of the mower is paddied to make cutting the grass more comfortable on your hands. Another great thing about this mower is that it has a nice wide cutting path of 20"
My biggest complaint is that the highest setting for height is 3" I would prefer it were 4" and for this reason it is getting 4 instead of 5 stars. If you have a large yard, unless you are superman or wonder woman you will not want to use this mower on a regular basis. Another thing I did not care for is that in the area behind the reel is a ledge that ends up getting full of cut grass... I would prefer if the grass fell on the ground because I had to stop on several occasions and remove this grass. Another thing with a reel mower is that if you go over a stick it will likely get stuck in the blade, requiring you to stop and remove it. It is a little difficult to push in a straight line compared to a walk behind because the motion of cutting means you are giving it a shove and it's easy to shove it from side to side depending on your stride.
How well it cuts
The Scotts Classic Reel Mower leaves the grass nice and evenly cut. In order to achieve this you have to mow frequently and only cut a small amount each time. If you let your grass grow and then cut it, the blades will just push the grass down rather than cutting it. My lawn was pretty long when I cut it and I had to go over it a few times, but I tried it on the parts I had already cut to 4 inches, so taking it down 1 inch it did a beautiful job and was much easier to push. If you cut every 3 days you should be able to get a nice even cut in one pass of the mower.
The perfect yard for a Scotts Reel Mower
Our lawn is a bit large for using a reel mower. Maybe I would use it if I only cut part of the lawn each day, maybe in thirds. Our lot is 150 x 80. I would think this mower would be ideal for a yard that is very small taking maybe 15 minutes to cut with a motorized mower. You also have to be someone willing to mow at least every third day during the heavy growing season. Another thing that would make your lawn ideal for this mower would be some shade. I think with the 3 inch height it might be a little short for full sun.
