27 Dresses --- Katherine Heigl, James Marsden, and Judy Greer Bring The Comedy

Feb 5, 2008
Review by
Rated a Very Helpful Review

Pros:Heigl and Marsden, very funny in parts, great chemistry between characters, better-than-average romantic comedy

Cons:none

The Bottom Line: In the realm of romantic comedies, this is a very good one that brings the laughs thanks to strong writing and good chemistry between the cast members.

Katherine Heigl has made a name for herself with several supporting roles, and now has a vehicle to call her own in 27 Dresses. The film depicts her as a girl named Jane, who has gone through her life supporting friends, family, and work acquaintances when they get married. She loves helping others a lot, and over the years has been a bridesmaid 27 times already. In fact, she has started making weddings her life, and she is so good at it, that she seems to be forgetting how to live her own life. While trying to split time between two weddings in one night, she catches the eye of a reporter who was working one of them to write up an article. Her energy, and her obvious attempt to hide that she is attending two weddings garners his interest, and he begins to try to find a way into her life.

At work, things don't seem to be much easier for Jane, who has been stuck in a job that she is over-qualified for, and has an uncontrollable crush on her boss of many years. Though she seems to be in control of every little detail, two things throw her life into a tizzy that starts to change both how she views things, and how she interacts with the people around her. The first is the influx of the reporter into her life (though she doesn't know he writes for a living) and her sister (a model from New York) coming to spend time with her in the city. Without being able to plan out everything, and get everything scheduled in a nice and tidy fashion, she begins to lose control on here day-to-day life, and with it the premise that she is happy with her life as it stands. But with some twists in the story, she could end up happier in the end as a result.

Even though most people who watch television already know who Katherine Heigl is, I really consider this to be her coming out party when it comes to film. She was pretty funny in Knocked Up, but she proves with this movie that she can actually carry a story without being crass or over-the-top. With her character of Jane, she is able to stretch her comedic "wings", and truly set herself up as someone that will be perfect for romantic comedies, and hopefully dramatic films later on in her career. Coupled with supporting characters James Marsden (the reporter here, most well known as Cyclops in X-Men) and funny-woman Judy Greer (Elizabethtown, The Village) the laughs come pretty frequently in the story, and carried by the strong writing of the script, they all flourish within the film.

27 Dresses could have been one of those romantic comedies where it becomes obvious from the beginning where it is going to head, and it could have just as easily gone down familiar routes with these types of films. It didn't do that though, and mixes a little bit of originality with a great cast that really brings the laughs and the authenticity that a film like this absolutely must have to succeed. Throw in a dash of Edward Burns as her boss, and Malin Akerman as Heigl's sister, and you have a talented cast that is able to work well with the material. If you are in the mood for a romantic comedy that is non-threatening, and something that we haven't quite seen before, this is definitely a film you should see. As a male viewer, I have to say that even I really enjoyed it, and it is definitely one that I will have to see again on DVD.
