I finally found it!!!! It is a toaster I can write home about!

Okay, if you have read any of my reviews lately, you might know that I have been on a toaster quest. Toasters these days are made extremely cheaply and dont seem to have any real quality to them. I have tried an amazing array of toasters ranging from the low cost of $10.00 on up into the hundreds. I have been consistently disappointed with the abundance of plastic parts and chronic inability to toast a simple piece of bread.
I have a few other rejects to write about, but in the mean time, I want to spread the word that I have found one! I have found a toaster that actually toasts. It toasts on one side and it toasts on the other side. It toasts evenly and it toasts to perfection!
Toasty perfection in my house at last!
This Dualit toaster has truly impressed us! I asked the lady at William-Sonoma why I should buy a $250 toaster because it seemed a bit ridiculous at the time. Yes, it has super sleek styling with a stainless steel body and polished actual metal chrome. One side of it curves down with a wonderful retro flair, but looks arent everything as I have found out along the way. She explained to me that these are hand made professional toasters! They are absolutely not made on an assembly line. One person in the UK makes them from start to finish. The British definitely know something about toast and Dualit has been around for more than fifty years. I had to try it.
Using it is interesting and nothing like any other toaster I have tried. The manufacturer recommends you preheat your toaster for a couple minutes to give the metal parts a chance to absorb some of the heat. I have used it on several occasions without preheating it and been perfectly satisfied with the results. Once the toaster is warm, you can toast continually with great results. This toaster has a toasting capacity of over sixty slices an hour! I cant imagine that ever being a toaster requirement for me, but it is interesting to note.
The toaster operates on a timer system. You simply turn the timer to an appropriate setting depending on how you like your toast. The timer knob ranges for zero to four minutes. Once you figure out which setting makes your perfect toast, you can be sure that you will get consistent results with that setting every time. If you preheat a couple minutes, it takes about a minute for light toast, a couple minutes for average and between two and three minutes for more well done toast. I have noticed that if I am using dark bread, the toasting time is longer. In addition, bread from the freezer should be in for an additional minute. You can hear the clicking of the timer as it toasts, but there is no bell at the end. I thought this might be hard to get used to, but I actually like it quite a bit.
What do I like besides the fact that it can actually toast?
The really cool function about this toaster is the fact that the toast does not pop up. Okay, okay
.when I first heard this, an instant red flag went up for me. Most of the other toasters I had tried up to this had a serious problem in my eyes. The toast didnt pop up enough and I would burn my fingers. I was quickly relieved to find that this is to keep the toast warm. The heating elements shut off and the toast can stay warm in the toaster while you do other things in the morning. There is a lever that raises the toast when you are ready for it, and it raises it sufficiently to easily grab it!
Another nice function is the one button that lets you choose one slice or two. When you only want one slice, you switch it to the one slice setting and only one of the slots heat up. This is pretty clever!
Some odd things
According to Dualit this is an extra wide 28mm slotted toaster. It does seem that the slots are wide when you look at it, but they really are not. A standard bagel has to be squished in a bit. We dont eat a lot of bagels, so this is not a real problem for us, but still seems like a bit of an oversight on Dualits part for the US market. They do sell a separate sandwich cage as an accessory. This would probably go a long way in putting a bagel in this toaster because it would hold it compacted in the cage. I like the idea of the cage anyway because it has its own built in drip pan.
The housing is not a stay cool type, but I would not expect it to be since it is made of actual metal. It doesnt get super hot, but caution should be used with smaller children (and accident prone adults such as myself).
Cleaning and care
The crumb tray easily pulls out from the front and can be rinsed off.
This toaster comes with a one year manufacturers warranty. It weighs in around three pounds. Exterior dimensions are 26 by 21 by 22 cm.
This toaster also comes in a three slice, four slice, or six slice model. In addition, you can purchase it in thirteen different colors or finishes to match any kitchen scheme.
I highly, highly recommend this one for anyone who is tired of the same old hockey puck excuse for toast. If you want moist and fluffy on the inside and toasted on the outside like toast used to be, then this is the toaster. I have tried many and taken many back to the store in my quest. The quality of the craftsmanship is high enough that I expect longevity to not be an issue. This one should be the last toaster I need to buy!
