This fast paced murder mystery, 2nd Chance, is co-authored by James Patterson and Andrew Gross. This isn't the first book they have collaborated on. The two previously wrote "1st To Die". 2nd Chance reunites those familiar characters from "1st To Die" with a new series of unsolved murders.
The Women's Murder Club is back in action and ready to take on the world. In 2nd Chance the four friends have a challenging puzzle to piece together. Why is a young African American girl being gunned down in front of church after choir practice and how does it tie into a murder of an elderly lady? But if anyone can handle this case and bring justice it is these four ladies.
The Women's Murder Club is made up of four of the brightest women working the homicide scene in San Francisco. Lindsey Boxer, the main character, is a detective who just got promoted to Lieutenant of San Francisco's homicide department. While still having trouble dealing with the tragic loss of a loved one she is thrust into this new murder case. Jill Bernhardt is a tough Assistant District Attorney who is always willing to put herself on the line to help capture a killer. Claire Washburn is an outspoken Medical Examiner who never makes a mistake. Cindy Thomas is a reporter for the Chronicle's homicide desk and uses her connections to help find clues.
At first glance a shooting at a church appears to be an isolated hate crime but before long the clues begin to indicate that there may be a serial killer on the loss. But this madman is different from you average serial killer because he changes his weapon of choice and his victims seem to have only one thing in common, they are African American.
Lieutenant Lindsay Boxer asks for the help of her friends when her investigation reaches a dead end. As the clues start to add up it becomes obvious that there is one other thing the victims have in common and at least one, if not all, of the ladies in the Murder Club is now in danger. To make matters worse, the killer knows who they are even if they can't figure out who he is.
In addition to the main story there are individual, personal stories for each of the women. Lindsay is trying to deal with the loss of a loved one as well as her long lost father. Jill discovers she is pregnant, it is a high risk pregnancy. Cindy has begun a new relationship. Claire has her husband and family to think about.
2nd Chance is filled with suspenseful twists. Just when you think you've got it all figured out this book throws you a curve.
The character development in 2nd Chance is excellent and it is easy to get lost in the story. There is a good balance between the murder case and aspects of the characters personal lives.
2nd Chance is a fast and easy read even at 416 pages. It was so interesting that I found it hard to put down. However, if I had wanted to put it down it would have been easy to find a stopping point because the chapters are very short (between 2-5 pages). The chapters alternated between the activities of the murderer and the Women's Murder Club.
2nd Chance is the second book in a series about the Women's Murder Club. The first story, "1st To Die", was also excellent. It isn't necessary to read "1st To Die" for you to enjoy 2nd Chance but I would recommend it anyway. The next book in this series, "3rd Degree", has recently been released.
Full of unexpected twists and turns, 2nd Chance is Patterson s second book featuring the Women s Murder Club. When a little girl is shot on the steps ...More at Buy.com Marketplaces
