Winchester Super X 30'06 Springfield 180 gr Silvertip
The 30'06 Springfield has brought down deer for over 100 years. It is still effective today because it keeps being renewed through advances in technology. Besides being chambered in military rifles for two World Wars, it has been chambered in hunting rifles since it was adopted in 1903 as the standard US rifle cartridge and it is still one of the most popular chamberings today.
A cartridge that has been continuously loaded for over a century has all the bugs worked out and the bullet weights and configurations, powder charges, and accuracy have all been fine tuned to make it one of the most reliable cartridges available. The cartridge, as one of the first modern designs is able to take advantage of all the increasingly efficient propellants and better projectiles because of its balanced design.
Another advantage is availability. 30'06 is available anywhere cartridges are sold. There are other calibers like 30/30 that have the widespread availability of the 30'06 but not many. Ammo availability is always something to think of when you are considering which caliber rifle to buy. 30'06 ammo is available in hardware stores and general stores throughout the country so if you forget your ammunition or need some more during your expedition, you are more likely to find it wherever you happen to be.
Winchester the manufacturer of the Super X line of cartridges which is the premium hunting line of ammunition. The Super X line is very popular and has been around for many years. The current boxes are silver with a big red X. Many shooters still remember the yellow boxes it came in earlier.
The cartridges feature Silvertip bullets. Silvertips are jacketed soft points with a protected point covered with a silver alloy tip. These bullets are designed for controlled expansion so they do not fragment inside the game, neither do they penetrate completely through and expend the energy outside the animal. The Silvertip bullets are designed to make the classic mushroom shape that stops inside the animal and kills it cleanly and humanely without needless destruction of meat.
With Winchester Super X Silvertip ammunition you get good performance regardless of what cartridge you hunt with. Silvertip bullets offer controlled expansion in heavier game like large bear, elk, or moose as well as whitetail or mule deer. Powerpoint bullets are also available in Super X ammunition for when quicker expansion is desired.
The 30'06 cartridges are available in 150, 165, or 180 grain in the Winchester SuperX line. Choose the 150 grain if you are shooting routinely distances over open country where you might get a shot at over 200 yards or more. If you are a woods hunter like me, choose the 180 grain. Either one is a good choice for deer.

Before going into the field, always check your rifle on the firing range with the same ammunition you are going to hunt with so your sights are properly calibrated for the ammunition. Be sure you can hit what you aim at with the gun and ammunition you plan to use. When you are target shooting remember to wear ear and eye protection.
Whenever you handle firearms, obey the four rules of firearms safety:
- All guns are always loaded.
- Never point a gun at something you are unwilling to destroy.
- Keep your finger off the trigger until your sights are on the target.
- Know your backstop. Guns can shoot through things.
Enjoy your time in the great outdoors!
