KMINER's Full Review: 3M Scotch Brite Scrub Sponge Made With Walnut Shel...
My husband is all about trying as many natural, recycled, and recyclable products as we can lately. We go into each product with an open mind, weighing price and performance. We have been hoping to find as many eco-friendly products that our busy family can use that perform well and are affordable.
We wash all of our dishes by hand. As a family of 5, plus 5 more pets, there is always something that needs a sponge! We have a perfectly good working sponge already, and honestly I was not thrilled when my husband brought home 3 of the 3M Scotch Brite Scrub Sponges Made With Walnut Shells.
First off, these sponges looked thinner than the other sponges we were using. They were in boring, eco-friendly colors of yellow and brown. They looked thin and flimsy in the packaging (which was a non-recyclable plastic wrapper by the way!). Still I said I'd try them with an open mind.
From the company:
" Scotch-Brite scrub sponge made with walnut shells provides effective scouring for tough jobs. - Walnut shells are natural abrasive which won't scratch most household surfaces, including non-stick cookware. - The sponge is made from cellulose, derived from wood pulp, a renewable resource."
So, as with many scrubber type sponges, there are actually two sides to this sponge - the more abrasive side and the smoother side.
Scrubber
The scrubber side is brown and the company states it's made from walnut shells. Other than the color, I really wouldn't have known it. The scrubber side really is tough and durable. It feels scratchy, but to just the right amount. This side has not scratched the variety of surfaces we have cleaned, and I was actually pleasantly surprised with the scrubber side.
Sponge
Okay, the sponge side is seriously just creepy. If you have any tactile issues at all (of which I have many!) you can barely stand this side. It is made out of cellulose and feels creepy. Really that's the best word for it. It does not feel like a sponge should and it washes items oddly. It has been very hard for me to put this into words, because all I have is the feeling - "EEEWWWWW!" I seriously cannot stand to use this side of the sponge, making it impossible for me to hold on to. After a week of using this sponge and being seriously grossed out every day, I told my husband it was going to have to go into the trash. To its credit, the sponge still held together well and probably could have handled more of our dishes - but I simply could not give it the chance.
Due to the creepy cellulose sponge side I really cannot get into using the 3M Scotch Brite Scrub Sponge Made With Walnut Shells. I applaud the idea, and would be willing to use a scrubber with walnut shells again. I really do like the idea of using these types of resources, but the cellulose idea really to me does not replace the effectiveness and need for a real spongey material.
The 3M Scotch Brite Scrub Sponge Made With Walnut Shells is not a product that I can personally recommend.
