Before I left the rehabilitation facility my staples and sutures were scheduled to be removed, the only problem was that there were a few gaps in the incision that hadn't healed completely. I didn't think that the small Steri-Strip pieces would be enough to protect the gaps and keep them from splitting open if they were bumped but I was complexly wrong. I had two falls after I left the hospital, both of them ended up with my stump hitting the ground. Even with all that trauma, the Steri-Strips kept the skin in almost perfect condition. That's not to say that they are designed to go through such a rigorous series of events but they truly exceeded my expectations.
I had 28 staples and 32 sutures over an eight inch incision, that's a lot of skin to cover and the Steri-Strips did a great job of protecting the area when they were removed. When you first see them they look like strips of packing tape with thread in it; they come in a variety of sizes and widths so they can be used for a variety of different applications. Mine were applied to clean, dry skin and they remained in place for over a month. They remained in place even after being washed, having an elastic shrinker put on and taken off twice a day and all the movement that comes with exercise.
The one thing that really impressed me was the comfort of the strips. I wear an elastic 'shrinker' to compress the amputation site so that I can wear a prosthetic in the near future. The shrinker is like an extremely tight elastic bandage and I was really worried that the pressure from it would cause the incision to pop or bust open but that never happened. Even when I went down a size from an extra larger shrinker to a larger, the strips didn't move or come away from the skin. They were applied by a wound care professional and he told me that they should be left in place until they fell off; after a month of wear the ones on the outside finally started coming loose.
I did pick at a few of them and they started to come loose and there was some adhesive left behind but some of that was dead skin or skin that became tacky. When they started to come loose and fall off it did pull some of the scabs off. Thankfully the scabs were dried up and didn't rip the skin open. If you are looking for some added protection to your skin when your staples, sutures or stitches are removed I can't recommend the 3M Steri-Strips enough. Ask your doctor if they could be used instead of traditional closures but leave the ultimate choice up to the professionals.
I was able to purchase a few small packages of Steri-Strips through a medical supply website but only needed a few of them so the other package is till sealed. I paid two dollars per package and there are ten strips per package. These would be a great thing to have if you have a cut that needs a little bit more than a band aid but doesn't require stitches. They are not absorbent like a band aid and there's not pad to soak up any blood or drainage so if you have something that is still 'juicy', the Steri-Strips might not be the best pick. If you have any doubts contact your doctor or primary care physician.
Even though this was my first experience with Steri-Strips I can say that, after wearing them for a month, they are comfortable, do an excellent job of protecting skin and scabs and hold up to a lot of use. The incision area was cleaned every day and the strips never came loose, likewise they stayed in great shape through physical therapy and having the shrinker taken off and replaced on a daily basis.
If you are buying them to replace strips that have been applied by a physician I highly recommend the 3M version. They peel off the backing strip easily and are a breeze to apply. If you are using these on a child you will want to make sure that they don't pick at them, even though the adhesive is strong eventually it will wear out. If I ever have the need for this type of product again in the future I will go with the 3M brand because of the price, sizes available and quality.
As always, thanks for the visit
