When my son chose to purchase the Playmobil Rock Castle with the money he received for Christmas this year, I could see we were moving into a different area of interest. I decided to focus on more figures and playsets to go with the castle for his birthday.

The Three Fierce Knights are a part of this theme from Playmobil. The set consists of three knights dressed completely in knight regalia with a sword or battle-axe and a shield. The knights have no insignias on them, so they can work with any of the other troops in this line, or be renegades out on their own.

The set is made of plastic. True to what I usually get from Playmobil, it has some give to it so things don’t break easily. This is good for the rough way some of the accessories seem to get handled, plus with them being left on the floor where they get stepped on and picked up to play with by the cats in the house. No matter how much they have batted something around, I haven’t seen any marks on the toys.

The coloring with Playmobil is always bright and attractive. It’s what makes the knights stand apart from each other. Each of them boasts a different color hair, neck wrap, shirt, pants, and cuffs. The neck wrap can be removed as can the gray metallic color helmets. Two are wearing black shoes and the third is wearing a brown pair. All of them move at the neck to swivel the head, move their arms up and down, and move their legs from a standing to sitting position and back again.

The gray metallic color of the helmets carried through to the accessories which give the same impression, be it the metallic impression of the sword or battle-axe or the look of metal at the center of the shield. I really like that there is no leftover plastic at the seams of the toys, everything is nice and smooth. Too many small pieces like this have rough edges from the plastic molds, but Playmobil is always high-quality and I don’t have to worry about rough edges.

The small pieces are a concern, whether you have pets or young children. The age recommendation is ages 4 and up. That would be accurate as swallowing the plastic pieces could be dangerous. The pieces in this set are large enough I don’t worry when I see one of the cats carrying it around in their mouth, but the concern is there.

My son uses the knights to do battle from the castle. Sometimes they protect the king, sometimes they lead a charge to the castle. Everything in the Playmobil world is interchangeable, so the accessories go fine with other figures and sets in this series. All of the figures have the same curved plastic hands for holding weaponry, so that’s all interchangeable too. My son even uses the Three Fierce Knights as part of the construction line as well. The possibilities for his imagination are endless. It’s also a big help with his fine motor skills as manipulating the small pieces really helps with that development.

The Three Fierce Knights are priced at $6.99 through the Playmobil Online Store. I feel that it’s well worth the price as the figures and accessories are quite durable and entertaining, while at the same time encouraging my son to use his imagination. I am sure they will be around for years to come among his toys and it’s something that will look cool sitting on a shelf long after he’s moved beyond the toy phase.
