Playmobil Three Gold Dragon Knights – Just Happy to be Invited
Written: Nov 25 '06 (Updated Dec 14 '07)
Pros:durable, versatile, well-made, fairly inexpensive
Cons:small pieces can get lost easily or swallowed
The Bottom Line: Another great set of figures for the medieval/fantasy series from Playmobil. You just can't go wrong.
My sons love of the fantasy series from Playmobil has created a new world atop his train table. One of the more recent entries into that world were the Three Gold Dragon Knights and they fit in nicely with the rest of the figures.
To me, these three guys look a little different. Their facial expressions resemble the Fisher Price Little People, rather than the fierce knights that have come before them. This is why I think theyre just happy to get to hang around with the other knights. Maybe theyre from out of town.
Like other figures in from Playmobil, the Three Gold Dragon Knights are made of brightly colored plastic. This plastic has a bit of give to it to prevent it from breaking easily. The figures and accessories are well-made, with no rough edges on seams for hurting the little hands that play with them.
All three of the knights are dressed almost exactly the same. They all have dark gray helmets and dark gray chain-mail vests over a black shirt and pants. The major difference seems to be the shoes as one of them has black shoes while the others have brown shoes resembling a natural leather in color. The result is a very authentic look, and a look of uniformity that makes me think they might be new to the knight scene. They havent been around the block enough to have mixed and matched just yet.
At least, not when they arrived in my home. Like all the other Playmobil figures, the Three Gold Dragon Knights can fit into clothing and adornments from other sets. Everything is interchangeable, including the weaponry. These knights each come with dull gray swords for a metallic look, and matching purple shields with what is supposed to be a gold dragon on them. I think it looks more yellow than gold, but I guess gold dragon knights sounded better than yellow dragon knights. They can pick up the shields of other knights that are around them and start using them in their curved hands. They can wear the helmets of fallen comrades if they are in battle.
Whats really neat is that they can also cross toy lines and join the construction workers at a construction site and save them from the ravages of a dragon theyve just uncovered, like something out of the movie Reign of Fire.
The pieces are small and can get lost easily or sucked up into the vacuum. Swallowing is an issue, too, and this is why Playmobil recommends these sets for ages 4 and up. If you have an older sibling who wants these toys, I strongly urge you to keep the toys segregated from a younger child whos inclined to put things in his/her mouth.
However, the small pieces and intricacy of manipulating the figure are a plus for developing a childs fine motor skills. I know I have preferred seeing my son play with these toys over the suggestions Ive gotten from the school of having him color with broken crayons. I really think it has helped as over the last year his skills in this area have improved greatly.
At $3.50 from the Playmobil Online Store we found it to be a bargain to put with the rest of the items in this line of figures. He positively loves the medieval/fantasy series from Playmobil as it was something he gravitated to on his own when he had money to spend last Christmas. I will likely try some other sets for him this Christmas due to the overwhelmingly positive experience weve had with Playmobil toys. Their durability means he will probably outgrow them before they break, but they will be able to stay around for future grandchildren who can also enjoy them.
