scmrak's Full Review: Vermont American Tool Company 3 Piece 2" Double En...
Ever notice how small tools apparently have the ability to grow legs and wander away? My recent move must've left some of the household tools homesick for Illinois, because they sure as heck aren't anywhere to be found here in Texas. What I had considered enough screwdriver bits to last for several years dwindled overnight to a single bit that had been chewed to near uselessness over the years. Off to local BigBox I went to get replacements, since I had lights to replace - now!
I should've paid more attention, I guess - I knew that I'd picked up a Vermont American Three-piece Double-Ended Bit Set, but what I didn't notice was that it comprised three different sizes. All three bits have that standard 1/4-inch hexagonal shank; all three are two inches long, and all three have a slotted bit on one end and a Phillips bit on the other. Those are good things. The bad thing is that only one of the bits - the smallest - is ever likely to be very useful. The three are
▪ a #1 Phillips bit with a #6-8 slotted bit on the other end ▪ a #2 Phillips bit with a 8-10 slotted bit ▪ a #3 Phillips bit with a 10-12 slotted bit
V-A forges the bits out of hardened steel to extend their useful life, and gives the Phillips tips some striation (or "ribs") to give a more secure grip. They've kindly labeled the shanks with the bit sizes as well. V-A is a division of Bosch (I didn't know that!); but the same three bit sizes are also available, also carded together, from names like General, Kobalt, and Irwin.
The problem is that most DIYers (people like me) don't run into screws that require the small size - Phillips #1, 6-8 slotted - very often, and almost never encounter a screw that needs a Phillips #3. In the latter case, the screw is often so large as to overwhelm a common power drill or cordless screrwdriver. I'd've been a lot happier to have gotten a set of three of the same size so that if one or two of the "triplets" headed off into the sunset, I'd have a replacement.
Not recommended for everyday use. You may pay a few cents more to buy three bits the same size, but then you'll have three bits you actually use.
