| namja's Full Review: 3dfx Voodoo3 3500, (16 MB) AGP Video Card |
I bought the Voodoo3 3500 video card for two reasons:
1. It had a TV tuner. Now I can watch TV while I surf the net. I make a little TV window (1.5" x 2") on the top left corner of the monitor when I surf. The TV comes out great. If something exciting or interesting was happening on TV, a simple double click on the TV window makes it go to full screen. Another neat feature is a VCR feature: you can record TV as an mpeg file. You can also capture still images (up to 640x480). Additionally, it has composite (RCA) in and out, as well as S-Video in and out.
2. 3dfx was having a $30 rebate on most Voodoo cards in September 2000 (I know this doesn't help you; sorry).
Now, having bought the card, it's been working excellent for me. Not only are the graphics rendering faster thanks to its 16 MB of Video memory (I had 4 MB before), I can also remove my DVD decoder card (freeing up on PCI slot) since the Voodoo3 card comes with an MPEG decoder built in. DVDs actually play better with just the Voodoo3 card than it did with just the decoder card or with both cards inserted.
I've only owned it a month, but I've been very happy with it. I was so happy with the TV resolution that I sold my TV last week!!!
The one drawback, however, is that if you want to watch TV away from your desk, you lose the convenience of a remote control (they provide a software remote -- on screen). I need to buy me a cordless mouse now.
