| wendy7734's Full Review: 3rd Foods Sweet Potatoes |
Gerber is well known for preparing quality and safe food products for babies. I have been feeding my daughter Gerber foods since she started on solid foods. Now that she is a year and a half, she has moved on from the jarred baby foods but I still do use them on occasion to make other dishes for her. When my daughter was around 8 months of age, we did start her on stage 3 foods and one of those that were frequently in her diet was 3rd Foods Sweet Potatoes. This orange puree can stain clothes pretty easily so don't even consider feeding these without a bib.
My daughter has always showed a strong preference for this jarred sweet potatoes puree beginning in stage one. As she became older, we moved her through the remaining two stages offered by Gerber. The main difference I saw between the three stages of food was the actual size of the serving. There are 6 ounces in each serving of the 3rd Foods Sweet Potatoes. The texture seemed to thicken slightly but there are no chunks of sweet potatoes in the stage 3. This puree is made with sweet potatoes and water only. I like this item about the 3rd Foods Sweet Potatoes, as it does not add extra sodium as a lot of babies’ foods do to give it more flavors. I found this has been helpful in getting my daughter to accept whole vegetables as the flavors are similar and are what she is accustomed to. This was one of the few items that she would finish in one sitting. We typically would have another food item such as chicken or turkey to complete a fuller more nutritional complete meal.
I still on occasion will purchase the 3rd Foods Sweet Potatoes, but this time I am using it in a base for a stew. I have used chicken and meat broth when I make stews for my daughter, but I have found that she really loves it when I use these potatoes. I will start by heating up a can of mixed vegetables that include peas, carrots, and corn. I take some thoroughly cooked chicken or turkey and add it to the vegetables. I will then blend the 3rd Foods Sweet Potatoes with the vegetables and the meat I chose and stir the mix until the puree has coated all of the added ingredients. The puree works great in bringing everything together. By doing this I am able to make a quick healthy meal that include protein and plenty of vegetables. The best part of this is that she loves it! This mix will last for 2-3 servings. I refrigerate the leftovers and will hold onto the stew for 2-3 days. Most baby food products should not be kept for longer than 3 days after opening.
A jar contains one serving in which there are a total of 110 calories. There is no fat from any of these calories. There is 40mg of sodium, which is natural to the sweet potato, and 430mg of potassium. There are 25g of carbs, 2g of fiber, and 15g of sugar. There is only 1g of protein in the jar that is equivalent to 6% of the daily recommend value. 3rd Foods Sweet Potatoes contains 640% of the daily-recommended amount of Vitamin A, which is fantastic! In addition, it also contains, 2% calcium, 2% iron, and 4% iron. This product does not contain any Vitamin C.
I highly recommend that sweet potatoes be introduced early on when trying solid foods. It is better to have a baby accustomed to vegetables than fruits from the beginning because they tend to take to the fruits easier because of their sweet flavor. 3rd Foods Sweet Potatoes is not as sweet as fruit but is still preferred by most babies that I have been around and it can start a great habit of eating vegetables.
A jar cost around $1.30 but coupons can always be found for Gerber foods.
