It appears the flat screen TV technology war is over and LCD has emerged victorious! And LG 47LG50 seems to be a great example of why it turned out this way. At 15,000:1 contrast ratio and 500 cd/m2 brightness it offers superb video quality on par with Plasma technology, yet at 54 pounds it can be mounted on a stand by a single person.
Features
LG 47LG50 comes equipped with pretty typical feature set for a 1080p TV of its class. While most other LCD TVs in this class offer 46” diagonal screen size, LG comes with 47” inch screen. For me this 1 inch of difference was surprisingly noticeable, and, in the end, may have been the reason I ended up choosing this model. And aggressive pricing on this model didn’t hurt either!
LG 47LG50 offers 3 HDMI inputs - two in the back and one on the side (which makes it really convenient for occasional plugging of my laptop that has and HDMI output port). It also has 2 Component inputs, 2 Composite inputs (one in the back and one on the side), one Cable input, one RGB PC input, and one USB input (on the side).
LG 47LG50 offers 8 different picture modes: Vivid, Standard, Cinema, Sport, Game, 2 user customizable modes, and my personal favorite – Intelligent Sensor mode. In the Intelligent Sensor mode LG 47LG50 automatically adjusts the brightness and picture mode depending on the lighting conditions of the room. So if you turn the lights off this TV automatically makes the picture dimmer as well, which is good provided how bright a picture this TV can produce! Intelligent Sensor has a somewhat funny side effect though – an occasional very bright scene in a relatively dark room can light the room enough to trigger the sensor to readjust itself!
Built-in HD Tuner
LG 47LG50 comes equipped with a built-in ATSC/NTSC/QAM tuner. I plugged it straight into cable without a set top box, and it auto-discovered most of the HD channels, many of them in 1080i. And while 720p channels look really good on this TV, 1080i channels look even better.
The built-in HD tuner appears to be quite fast, so switching between HD channels is pretty much instantaneous.
RGB PC Input
When plugging my laptop into the RGB PC / VGA input of LG 47LG50 I can get a PC monitor comparable video quality at 1920 x 1080 resolution, with very sharp text and images. In this mode the colors look decent but somewhat lackluster.
USB Input
USB Input of LG 47LG50 supports Flash memory drives as well as hard drives. Once a USB drive is plugged in, LG 47LG50 launches software to browse the directories, do slide shows of JPEG images, or play mp3 audio files. The quality of picture display in this mode is absolutely stunning – pictures look amazingly vivid and 3 dimensional – much better than viewing them on the computer monitor.
What I Don’t I Like About This TV
While overall I absolutely love my new LG 47LG50, there are a few things that I believe could be improved:
1) The sound is just OK. The speakers are actually quite small and fire downward. LG 47LG50 is equipped with optical, coax, and analog audio output ports, so this can be remedied by plugging it into a receiver for a better audio quality.
2) The remote control that comes with this TV is just an entry level programmable remote.
