I dont know how this could be possible because regular Duracell ultras are not rechargeable. just like all other alkaline batteries. Your cd player should not even try to recharge them. You have to hit stop twice to start the recharge and i only got it to work on a pair of radioshack ni-cad rechargeables. A pair of dynacharge that I tried didn't work. I had to recharge them in another charger. It says in the manual that you have to use Kenwood rechargeable batteries in it. I know you said it doesn't say that but it does. Some others work but not non rechargeable batteries like you say that you use. This was the same on all 4 of the ones I had. I tried 2 different models.
Theres no way you could use a cd player as much as you claim you do on alkaline batteries and only change them a few times in 2 years. Most of the Kenwoods from a couple years ago when I got mine only lasted 20 hours on 4 batteries.
About the only good thing about the Kenwoods I had compared to my Sony I have now is that the Kenwoods said hello when you turned them on.
I just wanted to warn people that the duracell ultra thing cannot be true but I guess I might have started going on about it too much.

I'm sorry if you don't believe me but I have been using Duracel Ultras, and if I use the power cord, they always recharge. I use this player every day for at least 2 hours on average, and that is the truth. When I wake up in the morning, I plug the player in, let it charge and then I'm off. I have read the instructions that came with the Kenwood player, and I have found nothing in it that says the player will only recharge Kenwood brand batteries. The only thing I have seen, was that you can only use an alkaline style battery because of this recharging feature.

No wonder your cd player still works. You hardly ever use it if you've only replaced the batteries 3 times in 2 years. Right now Kenwood has the worst battery life out of any big brand. You only get 12.5 hours out of 2 batteries, 25 out of 4 and thats on the current model. Sony's and Panasonics have way longer than that. The best one is the Sony that lasts about 40 hours on 2aa batteries.
When I had the Kenwood, I used Ni-cad batteries and 2 of them would last more or less a day of use. (about 2.5 hours), and that was on all 4 of their cd players that I had so it wasn't just a defective one.
Also, you can't recharge Duracells unlike what you said. Besides that Kenwoods (just like most others) only recharge their own brand of ni-cad batteries.
Everyone has their own experience, but almost everyone I know that has had a Kenwood portable has had problems with it. I had 4 of them break. You can read my review if you want.
I just wanted to point out a few things in your review that didn't make sense.
