SONY? Making A P.O.S product? IT JUST DOESN'T WORK!

Written: Jul 24 '03
Pros:nice size, speakerphone & intercom
Cons:not clear on answering machine, doesn't work, INTERFERENCE
The Bottom Line: Stay away from microwaves with this cordless phone. =(

I'm definitely a SONY fan. I bought a SONY television for my mom, I bought SONY headphones from me and my little sister. My dad highly recommends SONY products too. Well SONY, you really SCREWED ME OVER with this phone.

We needed a phone for my mom's business line. We didn't need Caller I.D, but we needed an answering machine. We stumbled across the Sony SPP A945 Cordless Phone at Sears for $65.00. Not that bad of a deal.

What I like

I like the size of the phone and base. (The color I bought was black and thats the only color I saw.)

Phone Description: It's about 7 inches long and about 1 1/2 inches wide. It has a TALK and OFF button. That might take a lot of getting used to because usually it is just one button. The TALK button is also the Flash button. Then there are the decent size number pad. Above that is the bottons HOLD, INTERCOM, and REDIAL. Under the number pad is PGM, Speed Dial, and Channel. The phone is a comfortable size, isn't too heavy, and feels good in your hands.

Base Description: Buttons include: Time/Set, Select, Menu, Erase, Rec/Memo, Repeat, Skip/Quick, Mailbox 1, Mailbox 2, Mailbox 3, Volume -/ , PGM, Redial/Pause, Speed Dial, Flash, the number pad (0-9)Intercom, Hold, and Speakerphone.

I like speakerphone,menu/time/date, intercom is easy to do. When you press speakerphone, dial on the number pad on the base and talk to the person, it is very clear and you don't have to scream for the person to hear you. The menu - which includes number of rings, etc is very easy to operate as well. The intercom feature also works very well. I used this when I was on the lines with my friends, they asked me to go somewhere, I would put them on hold, press intercom, contact my mom through there instead of screaming down the stairs "MOM, CAN I GO..." Very simplistic.

Side note. I don't use speed dial. I never will. If you read the manual - you can learn how to do it. But wait, read the rest of the review first.

WHAT I HATE

INTERFERENCE. Go ahead and stand by a microwave (that is in use)with this phone. You will not hear the other person, you will have to hang up and call them back on another phone. The other cordless I have in the house works perfectly when the microwave is on. It's horrible!

IT JUST DOESN'T WORK. Sometimes, I would press talk and it would beep three times and not turn on. You would have to put it on the base, take it off the base, and then you could use this. Just a real quick type of thing. It's fully charged and everything and it still happens. Talk, BEEP BEEP BEEP. So I run to the base, see the CHARGE light come on for 5 seconds, take it off, and I then could use the phone. Isn't it supposed to be simple? Why that happens...I have no idea.

ANSWERING MACHINE FUZZINESS. My mom recorded her "Hello, I can't come to the phone right now, so leave a message and we'll return your call." Too bad every single word sounded like, "Elo, I ...pahone sshhright dow, so shhhdeave ahh shhmesageeee shhhh..youreee cale." Get my drift? When you play messages, it also has a "fuzzy" effect.

Packaging
Wrapped in bubble wrap and thrown into a box.

Overall
What happened Sony? I don't feel like having to switch cordless phones when I'm near a turned on microwave. I don't feel like hearing some parts of peoples messages because of fuzziness. I don't feel like running to the base because the phone just won't "work." Thats rediculous. I love the size, and the speakerphone and intercom works well. But Sony, you definitely screwed me over. Too bad I through out the box and receipt. =(
