| csxpert's Full Review: Denon AVR-4800 5.1 Channels Receiver |
Up until recently I used this reciever to power my B&W 604S2s and my B&W CC6 center and DS6 surround speakers. This reciever claims 125W RMS power when all five channels are driven.
I just bought a new Rotel 1080 amp for dedicated 2 channel listening. The difference is just amazing - the ROTEL just opens up and is able to drive the B&Ws flawlessly and with much greater authority, while the DENON was great it does not seem to have the juice to drive the hungry B&Ws at a higher volume, so I recommend this reciever to drive speakers with a lower power requirement and also high sensitivity (probably 91 db). I now use the DENON for movies (5.1) and the ROTEL for 2 channel. The DENON is very configurable due to its many outputs.
The imaging and clarity is very good. DTS decoding is excellent - listening to the DTS-ES soundtrack on the film "Gladiator" was nothing short of stunning! The many different DSP simulation modes are difficult to use - this reciever has loads of features that can be very confusing. The skimpy manual does not seem to scratch the surface of using this complex unit.
This reciever has many different overload protection circuits and also two cooling fans so DENON has done a very good job in this area. In the 6 months I've had it I have not encountered any problems! The reciever does not have torroidal transformers like high end amps (like the ROTEL) but I have not heard any detectable interference from the transformer.
The metallic colored remote is very confusing and a bit funky looking but some key buttons like volume (:-) are clearly marked! This amp is also very heavy (40-50 lbs) and quite large...it barely fits in my audio rack!
I use the TOSLINK interface from my DVD player (Toshiba SD9200) and it picks up automatic audio config information sent to it. When the DVD starts you can see it configuring itself based on information sent to it from the DVD player which is pretty cool! This info is put on some DVDs and adjusts the levels of the various channels according to the directors recommendations.
Overall, I love this reciever and I'm very glad to own it. I give this reciever high marks. I bought it from Dynadirect.com which with no problems.
