Pros: Great pause and slow features. Clock sets itself.
Cons: Clock sets itself.
The Bottom Line: If you want a VCR, this is one to consider. My kids have shoved tapes in sideways (what took out our first VCR), and it's stood up to the challenge.

| grdngate's Full Review: JVC HR-VP780 VHS VCR |
We went through three VCRs in a six month period of time. Our children took out one, and the other two were given to us and just kicked the bucket on their own. So what other choice did we have than to go buy a new one??? It was either that or listen to, "But, Mommy, why CAN'T I watch Blues Clues???" 10 hours a day, seven days a week.
My husband had a JVC in the Army, before we got married. It was a great VCR, but the tape door broke off in transit from base to base. He ended up selling it to a friend of his, just because he didn't like to look at it. So off to the store we went in search for a JVC.
We found one in our price range that had the features we wanted...stereo, play, rewind, and fast forward.
Since we brought it home, I've discovered that the clock sets itself by the PBS station. All I have to do is turn the TV to PBS, and the clock sets itself. Then it goes through and programs in all the cable channels. (It also has the option of being able to manually set the clock.) The draw back is, it takes about 10 minutes for it to set the clock, so it has to stay on PBS until it's set. It always seems that I have to set the clock when there is something on that I'd rather not watch. That's not such a big deal, but for some reason, the clock reset itself a couple weeks ago, and now it's two hours behind.
One feature I like is the fast forward/reverse/pause dial on the unit itself. If I'm looking for something specific on a tape, I can use the dial to fast forward or reverse through the tape as slowly as one frame at a time. And when I let go of the dial, it pauses the tape. The drawback to that is when I'm fast forwarding or rewinding through the tape quickly, and I don't want it to pause when I get to what I want to see, it does.
But, like I said before, all we really wanted was something that would play, rewind, and fast forward. We got that and more. Now, if we can just keep it away from the kids....
