| hoyafb's Full Review: JVC HR-VP780 VHS VCR |
After deciding to upgrade from my 8 year old GE, I narrowed down my options to JVC, Panasonic, Sony and Toshiba. I wanted a Panasonic, since it got very high marks from Consumer Reports, but it just did not have the features I wanted. The JVC 780 did not have it all either, I could never find my perfect VCR, but this one was more than adequate. The 780 differs from lower-priced JVCs because it has a jog/shuttle button on the VCR.
I liked the automatic clock. However, I could not get it to work because the time signal was not being received by the 780. I think the cable company is to fault. However, no problem. The 780 allowed me to set my VCR for Daylight Savings Time. Additionally, onscreen menu gives you many different options regarding both audio and video quality. Many of these functions can also be accessible simply by the press of one button on the remote control, without the need to enter the onscreen menu each time. The remote also glows in the dark. This is very useful for my California friends who can then stare at the remote, and wonder what it might have been to watch that movie had the power not gone out.
The 780 records and plays back very well. However, it only has two modes, EP and SP. If you every plan on taking videos to a video professional for editing, they will probably complain if the tape is in EP(extended play). This VHS is also unique in that it will play S-VHS tapes, albeit in VHS video quality. It will not record in S-VHS. Anyway, when I played back movies and homegrown tapes, I noticed the 780 would correct any audio and video problems with the tape.
The MTS-decoder for Hi-Fi Audio is very impressive. I link my 780 up to my JVC receiver, and the sound is very clear. I tried using a friends Panasonic on my system for comparison, and the sound came out scratchy.
However, one might want to know that you will run into only one source of maintenance. This VCR is equipped with a filter that picks up bits of dust. Eventually this filter becomes filled with dust, and needs to be removed. It is just a little plastic piece, but nevertheless important to note.
