| sonalb's Full Review: Olympus Stylus Zoom 140 QD 35mm Film Camera |
My husband bought this camera right before our wedding to take along on our honeymoon to Hawaii. We did tons of research on the web to find the best camera for us. We were looking for a light weight camera with a substantial zoom and good quality photos. Everything pointed to the Olympus Stylus Zoom 140. Besides, my parents had an Olympus and had always been happy with it. Well, our pictures from Hawaii came back and to say the least both my husband and I were so disappointed! The results were not even close to the natural beauty we had experienced in real life. The pictures were dark and dull. We didn't even show them to our friends and family after bragging about our amazing trip for so long. I had used the red eye function on all the night-time photos yet they all came back with red eye!
Then five months later I went to Sydney for the 2000 Olympic Games. I was thrilled to be at the Opening Ceremonies and ready to click away with every moment so that I could share this wonderful experience with friends and family back home. Half way through the ceremonies, my zoom was stuck and would not retract. The camera just stopped functioning! I was so devastated that I would not have any memories to show for this moment. I hurried to the nearest vendor and bought a Kodak disposable camera! Well, needless to say that my Olympic pictures were useless.
My experience with this camera gets worse though. I contacted Olympus customer service in the US and asked if there were any repair centers in Australia. They told me that there were but it would take 6-8 weeks to get it repaired! What good would that do me now? The Olympics would be over in 6-8 weeks! I then asked her what the procedures were to get it repaired in the US and the woman was so rude and unprofessional! She told me all that sort of information could be found on their web site and hung up on me! I thought customer service meant something in the US!?!
I got back to the US and took the camera to one of the repair centers listed on my warranty. They came back to me stating I would need to pay $117 in order to get the camera fixed. The damage was due to impact and the warranty would not cover the expenses. I tried to explain to customer service that this wasn't possible since I didn't recall ever dropping the camera and I always carried it in my carry-on luggage. Olympus Customer Service once again proved to be rude and unhelpful. They said their technicians had determined it was from impact and their technicians are never wrong. If I wanted my camera fixed I'd need to pay $117.
So, I've spend $250 (original purchase) plus $30 (extended three year warranty that seems to be good for nothing) plus $50 (case plus remote) plus $117 (repair). $447 on a camera I've used for five months and has produced some disappointing results for some of the most memorable moments of my life.
