I tend to be hard on cameras taking them everywhere, and they occasionally bang into things as they swing from the strap over my arm. So when I went to buy a new camera I was looking for two things.
One, I wanted it to be sturdy. I felt that the Olympus Stylus series with the clam-shell case met the bill. It is featured as an all-weather camera, which I also liked . I bought the DXL kit which comes with a leather case, giving the camera some additional cushioning. And, very important, it is so small that I can put it into my pocket book and no longer have to have it swinging from my shoulder!
Secondly, I wanted to take close ups, so that I could take good portraits of my grand children. That is why I chose the Zoom 140 with a zoom lens that goes from 38mm to 140 mm. It has not disappointed in that department. I especially like that I can get that range in such a small camera.
An unusual and new feature of the camera is the Visual Confirmation Finder. It lets you know when you have actually taken a picture. No more taking a second photo because you are not sure if you really snapped one or not.
What I don't like about the camera is that the date/time imprint is so small and light that I can't see it on some snaps. However, some might actually like that the date/time imprint is so inconspicuous.
Also, the instruction manual is very simplistic. Perhaps it needs to be so as it gives the same instructions in three languages. I wish manufactures would stop doing that as it makes the booklet so thick.
I bought this camera on line at Beach Camera for $243 plus shipping. Even with the shipping, the price was about $30 to $45 less for the DXL model than at my local stores. Dealing with Beach was easy and efficient.
