| ccn158's Full Review: Sharp MD-X7 Shelf System |
Sharp, in my opinion, are unfortunate to be operating in a market dominated by bug players such as Sony and Technics, for good quality products such as this will continue to go amiss by the public.
The MX series has always been a direct rival almost everything else, and as a result, Panasonic, Sony, Aiwa, and Sharp systems tended to offer the same features. Only Technics really got away with it, with it's all seperate-systems being a winner in the premium market.
The latest MDX-7 again, has followed feature-wise it's main competitors, but not in the looks department - this baby is sheer black (or dark grey), with an impressively large LCD display. In a nutshell, I think it's a compromise between a conventional CD hi-fi and a 'lifestyle' system.
Here's what it offers:
Minidisc Mode:The first thing you'll notice is the system has MD capacity, a move towards everything will go in the future. MD's are becoming more and more accessible, and it's great to be able to use them on a system such as this. Full control is available, you can edit, record and rename to your heart's content. Recording quality is superb, and I'm tempted to say that it's worth the money for the recording quality alone.
Superb sound: Make no bones about it, the sound quality is superb on this system. Even just at 80 watts RMS (root mean squared) the system delivers some serious bass, and will definately be more than enough to get the neighbours round to complain. If you can hook a sub-woofer up, then you're in for even more fun. The bass can go to the max with very little distortion, and the treble similarly so.
LCD Screen: One of the features that I like is the LCD screen, which has black characters on a green background rather than green characters on a black background. It's a nice touch, and it means that there's more light in the room when all the lights are out. The large LCD display means that there's bags of room for looking at information; useful when renaming MD tracks.
Other nice things: Other than that, there's many other nice little touches on the machine. A nifty little remote control allows you to adjust just about anything from the comfort of your seat, and also the 3-CD changer which comes in three different levels, so you know exactly what you've got in there. The speakers are very nice, and complement the system well.
Overall: A very nice machine that looks good and sound good. It's just a shame that there's so many alternatives out there. That said, you're not going to do much wrong buying this.
