| kdragon's Full Review: Sony Walkman D-EJ915 Personal CD Player |
Originally when I started looking for a portable music device I was leaning towards getting either an mp3 player or a mini-disc unit because the two most important things I was looking for were small size and excellent skip resistance. However, the steep prices commanded by these types of devices prompted me to start investigating portable CD players. I realized that a CD player would lack some of the functionality provided by either a mini-disc recorder or an mp3 player , such as live recording or storing song name information, but I didn't need any of that functionality and was quite willing to make some sacrifices for a price difference of almost $50-100. Another deciding factor was that I occasionally take long trips during which I like to listen to a couple different CD's. While a mini-disc player could accomplish this easily, it would be expensive to get enough storage for an mp3 device to also do the same.
I found that this CD player (which is still the smallest CD player available, I believe) was small enough for me to fit into all of my jacket pockets (including the chest pocket on my wool coat) and was also quite impressed by its ability to resist any sort of skipping even when taken running or shaken vigorously. I had also considered the D-EJ815 model from Sony but the tiny increase in size over the D-EJ915 made it feel bulky when in some of my jacket pockets and too large to fit into some of my smaller pockets at all. The D-EJ815 does have the advantage of having an LCD display on the CD-player unit, which the D-EJ915 lacks, but I decided that size was more important than the LCD display.
The remote control which comes with this player is excellent and nicely backlit, and once you get used to the controls you don't even have to look at the remote control to navigate a CD. The case it comes with is great for taking jogging, but it could be improved upon greatly. The complaints I have about the case are that you need to remove the player from the case before you can change the CD. On top of that, you need to unplug the headphones in order to remove the player from the case. A little bit of a pain if you intend to use the case quite a bit.
One of the first things I did when I got the CD player was to swap out the headphones which came with the unit for a more expensive pair. The sound difference was amazing. Bottom line, this CD player produces great sounds, but you need a better pair of headphones than those which come with the unit.
In summary, I am extremely happy with the CD player. I've owned it for about 2 months now and taken it jogging almost every day. The sound quality is great, it doesn't skip, it's small and compact, and the battery life is incredible. I'd recommend this CD player to anybody, although I'd urge people to consider the less expensive D-EJ815 if having the absolute smallest CD player is not important.
