Having been a sales assisstant at the UK's number one electrical retailer I have had ample opportunity to sample a wide variety of discmans.
Firstly I would only choose Sony. This is because, at the time of writing this article, they are the only company to have made a skip free discman. That's right - the G-Protection on their discmans really does mean skip free playing.
Secondly I have had an opportunity to listen to a variety of the G-Protection range and I have to say that the D-EJ915 is the premium player.
The sound quality is the best I have heard in any discman, and noticeably better than the other players in Sonys range.
Also the size and feel has to been seen to be believed. The aluminium casing makes it feel very good quality, and the styling is fantastic. This is one discman you won't want to keep in your pocket.
But coming to that the size means that it will slip into a pocket quite easily, and its weight means it isn't uncomfortable to carry around.
Next is the remote - finally CD player remotes have caught up with mindisc ones and, although it is a little bulky, the back lit display on this one works fantastically. The remote is well layed out and you can soon get used to using it without really thinking. Shame its not made of aluminium and styled like the discman though.
The other main factor to consider is battery life. The D-EJ915 runs off two slimline, light rechargeable batteries and can also be run off normal AA batteries by the add-on pack (supplied). The add-on battery pack is poorly styled and feels cheap and nasty, but more often than not the slimline batteries will surfice - especially since the battery life is very, very long (30+ hours).
Infact the only real downside to the D-EJ915 is its lack of radio, but I guess you can't have everything.
All in all a top quality player. Hard to see how this could be beaten.
