| eltonlin's Full Review: Sony Walkman D-EJ915 Personal CD Player |
I just received the Sony D-EJ915 as a gift, and I am amazed at its size and weight. A little over half an inch thick, this new 'CD Walkman' is unreal!
First, despite the small size, the CD player is well constructed. The strong plastic and magnesium case has a solid feel and has survived through several accidental drops. The lid opens with a slide of a lever and metal arms click into place as the lid opens. When closing, the lid 'snaps' shut. Very nice tactile feedback.
Given Sony's penchant for nice design, this CD player is quite sleek which matches its low profile and size. The buttons on the Cd player provide basic functionality, and are quite small and inconspicuous. (This leads to problems later when operating the player with big fingers). The batteries (Sony NiMH, included) are hidden in a compartment accessible only when the lid is opened, and can also be charged via the CD player using the included AC adaptor.
The Cd player's advertised play time - 60 hours or so- is possible with the long lasting NiMH batteries and a separate battery pack (which uses 2 AAs). This battery pack looks very similar to a small stick of dynamite or a light stick, and connects to the AC adaptor port. The one problem I found with this battery pack is the fact that there are no hooks to attach the pack to the CD player, so when traveling, it pretty much flies/dangles all over the place.
In terms of ease of use, relying on the small controls located on the CD player itself makes the CD player quite difficult to use. This is compounded by the fact that there is no digital display on the player. HOWEVER, there is an included remote which is quite easy to use, very ergonomic, and quite sleek and trendy. The indiglo display lights up in a nice shade if indigo/baby blue as it displays the track, time elapsed or time remaining. The remote is fully functional, and provides all basic functions as well as bass adjustments, the ability to program tracks, repeat tracks, and volume control. The way you play and fast forward/rewind using this remote is great, but hard to desribe. Must try it out in order to find out. It's great!
Now, the most important aspect is the sound quality. Well, I am quite impressed. The included wraparound sport headphones are clear and crisp. The bass boost and trebles that come out of the player are amazing, better than the older Sony I currently have. Combine the great sound with the G-shock protection, and you'll be in heaven. The g-shock eliminates the need for ESP (hence the smaller size) as it is able to "predict" shakes and disturbances to eliminate skips. I'm not exactly sure how it works, but given that i've taken the player around for several 3-5 mile runs, it has yet to skip once.
Other notable features. The cd players comes w/ a nice leather/vinyl pouch w/ built in velcro hand strap- great for workouts/runs. The sport headphones fit comfortably, though get tangled easily in the long headphone cord (you can use any set of headphones you want). The optical out feature of the player is nice and provides great quality for MDs. (In addition, the player supports CD-text).
In summary, this player is definitely worth the extra money invested in it. It's pretty much Sony's top of the line (aside from the hard to find EJ01) and it definitely belongs up there. Aside from the minor inconveniences (due to its small size), it provides great sound in a small package.
