| dlc24's Full Review: Sony Walkman D-EJ611 Personal CD Player |
Having used my previous Kenwood CD player for about 2 years since 1998 that had terrible skipping despite the "40sec" protection and 1-2 hour battery life, I yearned to find a CD player that lived up to the specifications listed on the box.
Browsing through the shelf at my local Circuit City, this circular, bright metallic blue object immediately caught my attention. Wow, Sony CD Walkman with a promised no-skip and 25 hrs of battery life!!!
Well, I generally trust products by Sony as having reasonably good performance. I am pretty skeptical about the promises made with portable electronics that may have been put on me from my previous experiences.
But, putting in my batteries and putting in my first CD, I was absolutely impressed with the full sound coming out of my headphones. There's basically a 3-level bass-setting that sets the sound. At maximum setting, I have never heard a bass as full as the one that came out of this player. Both high and low sounds were very clear. The sound was so good that I sold my Sony 3-piece boombox and hooked up my Sony to some Boston Acoustics BA635 speakers with subwoofer (see my review on BA635). The sound I get is just like a shelf stereo system.
About the other details, there are two jacks. One for headphones and the other for input out (I.E. connected to my speakers). The buttons are typical for CD players: Play/Pause, reverse, forward, stop, random, program, repeat. Located inside the CD player is a switch that allows one to toggle on and off the G-Protection anti-skip. Located in the battery compartment (2 AA)is an AVLS switch that maximizes the sound volume for "hearing safety". There's a socket for remote, but doesn't come with the package.
About the G-Protection, this was the second point that impressed me greatly. I can jump around, shake it, hold it horizontally, hold it vertically, run with it with absolutely no skipping at all. What a dream come true that this player had delivered the promises that I've been looking for! Battery life is also very good. About 20-25 hours on 2 AA batteries, but about 10-15 for NiCd rechargeables.
Another thing that I like about this player is the hand-strap. Ever have that problem that the CD player always seems to drop on the floor when you're fumbling around for your keys? Well, the handstrap is a fairly good precaution against dropping. It loops around your wrist and comfortably is held by hand. The funny thing is that I spend a while trying to loop it in the player only to find that the manufacturer never completely drilled a hole. I took a screwdriver and chisled my way in about 2 minutes without any problems.
A great portable CD player by Sony and definitely recommended.
