| speedrcr99's Full Review: Sony Walkman D-EJ611 Personal CD Player |
I did not look long, I did not look hard, because once I saw, heard and shook the Sony D-EJ611, I had made my decision.
I was looking for a CD player that I could take running and biking with me and was almost sure I'd have to purchase an MP3 player, but was turned off by their prices. It had been six years since my last CD pIayer purchase, so I was not familiar with the new technology. Confronted with ESP and Anti-Skip and G-Protection in a variety of players, the reason this Sony caught my attention was it's unique blue color and shape. It is round; not much larger than a CD itself, and only one inch thick-- very easy to hold in your hand.
The next thing that caught my attention was the price. In fact, I thought the sale price of $80 belonged to another player and couldn't believe that it actually belonged to this one. It had the features that I wanted: a "line out" jack, a headphone jack, easy to read and operate buttons on the top of the player, easy to read and operate volume buttons on the side of the player. It has a shuffle play mode, programable play mode, and three level of bass. A feature that I've really come to appreciate is that the CD will continue playing from where it last left off if it hasn't been removed from the player. This saves battery power over using the "pause" button. The battery power is very good, however. I've gotten about 25-30 hours playing time from 2 AA batteries.
The real selling point however, is that I could not make this player skip. I was shaking it up, down, around, whacking it with my hand, all the while listening to a CD. The laser didn't miss a beat. This thing was solid. I was sold. It does have an option to turn G-Protection off, but I never have. In fact, the manual says that the batteries last longer with G-Protection on!
I have taken this player running and Rollerblading and have not missed a note of music while doing so. On one occasion, when the battery started to get low, the CD did start to skip. I have not taken this player mountain biking, but would not hesitate to do so. It has my total confidence.
Once, as I was running, the player slipped out of my hand (it has a wristband so things like this don't happen--but guess who wasn't using it?) and fell about three feet to the ground on the pavement. I thought for sure my glory days of skip-free CD playing were over. But nothing happened! It got a little scratched up, but that's it. Everything works as it was intended. "Nice save, Sony!"
The sound quality is good and probably average for CD players. I would guess that because of it's low price compared to other higher-end players, that the other players have more features and possibly better sound quality.
This player comes with headphones and an AC adaptor; for those times when you're doing hard-core sports inside the house.
I would recommend this player to exercise enthusiasts who don't want to spend the money on an MP3 player. You can take this player anywhere: running, biking, blading, demolition derby, snowboarding, aerobics, professional trampolining, everything. People who don't have a reason for G-Protection should purchase something else for less money or with more features/better sound.
