Pros: Great quality surround sound.
Cons: Won't play homemade CDs.
The Bottom Line: This is an excellent addition to your entertainment center. If you're getting a DVD player, spring for the theater system package, and change the way you watch movies.

| angieanders's Full Review: Sony DAV-S300 Theater System |
My husband talked me into buying a DVD player, and it wasn't until we were looking for one that we considered buying a package DVD and home theater system. The DVD players were expensive (to us anyway) and the packages were not that much more, so we thought, what the heck, why not get the whole deal?
We liked the Sony DAV-S300 DVD/Dolby Digital Home Theater System (wow, that's a mouthful!) to begin with because of it's small, compact size and appearance. It's very slim and silver, with a volume dial (knob) and a slide out disk holder. The other models we looked at were big and clunky and plastic looking, with cheap plastic buttons and knobs. The speakers that came with the others (Panasonic, etc) were larger as well, thought the sound was inferior. The Sony speakers are small (about four by four inches) and attractive. After listening to the Sony, we went all over town comparing prices, and found the best at Circuit City, at $599.00.
We brought it home. It was easy to set up, the instructions detailed and the wires all color coded. It came with five small speakers, one for each corner of the room and one for directly above the TV. It also came with a larger woofer, to be set right beside the TV. Included was enough color coded wire to run the speakers to each corner, with plenty left over. Each speaker is mark for the corner it goes in, such as back right, front left, center and so on.
The remote control does everything but make coffee. The upper cover flips up to reveal a whole other remote beneath for the television, so you aren't juggling 3+ remotes around everywhere.
The DVD player will hook up to the TV and the VCR, so that you can watch TV or VHS movies using the surround sound theater system. It also has a stereo and CD player, for music listening, and several sound settings to use for different levels of base and sound.
I went to Home Depot and bought some small corner shelves to install in the top corners of the livingroom, near the ceiling. The speakers were run to each corner and set on each corner shelf, and the wire was run along the corner into the carpet and around the room to the TV. They are hardly noticable, and the wires are almost invisable as well.
The DVD player plays great, the display area is digital, and lit up so you can read the settings in your dark "theater". The sound is fantastic. It is best when sitting in the center of the room with the speakers all around you, but you can still tell it's surround sitting in any other area of the room. The first DVD we watched was The Patriot, and during the canon scenes, we were almost ducking as we heard canon balls whizzing past our heads and into the background. I didn't really think it would be that much different, but it is!
The only problem I have had with it is when I tried to play a homemade CD that had been recorded off of the computer. It wouldn't acknowledge that there was a CD in. It kept saying "No Disc". All other CDs and DVDs it plays just fine.
Anyway, that's my take on the DAV-S300 DVD/Dolby Digital Home Theater System. If you're thinking about getting a DVD player, it's worth the extra money to get the theater system. If you're getting a DVD/Theater system, I highly recommend this one. You'll be quite satisfied.
