| Mom2TyZick's Full Review: Sony DAV-S300 Theater System |
I’m way out of my comfort zone with these electronic gadget reviews, but since I own one, I thought it might be nice to write a few words down that regular Joes like myself can understand. This is my disclaimer: I’m no expert. I’m simply an owner and user and these are my thoughts.
Having said this, I am a little disgruntled with some of the reviews from the experts in this field. They have callously referred to my most prized and recent acquisition as “good enough for an apartment.” I don’t know about most folks in America, but $600 is a lot to drop on something that is just “good enough.” I think this thing is fantastic!
We acquired the Sony DAV S300 DVD/Dolby Digital Home Theater System as part of a package deal when we bought our television. We paid the full $600 for the System at Circuit City, but got a few hundred knocked off of the price of the television. My point is that you can catch these little gems on sale. Sony is a name I trust and the Home Theater System comes with a one-year parts and labor warranty that is a nice guarantee if the name alone doesn’t sell you.
The look is ultra-modern (which will probably be outdated next year); it is sleek and compact and comes in a nice shade of matte silver. It matches the hue of my Sony Wega television perfectly. Of course, that was enough to sell me on the thing, but wasn’t I pleasantly surprised when we got the thing home and it worked perfectly! It has a digital viewing screen on the front that gives information such as what track the CD is on or if the CD tray is open or closed. The volume dial is a silver knob and the player has a single slide out disc tray.
The set-up was super easy, according to my father and husband who together did the task. My father is an electrician, so perhaps that had something to do with the degree of difficulty experienced but I don’t think so. My husband was also able to figure it out on his own(God forbid he read the instructions), as well.
The speakers are small, but pack a lot of punch. We only use our surround sound for DVD’s, so when we put one in, I inevitably jump thinking that something is behind me when the movie starts. It is just that realistic. There are five in total, one for every corner of the living room, and one for just above the television. All are labeled for correct placement around your room. Also included is a sub-woofer that we sit on the floor beside the television. Some people put the sub-woofer behind the television, so either way is acceptable. The sound is incredible and truly enhances any movie you watch. The few I would recommend to highlight this system would be Top Gun, Days of Thunder, Saving Private Ryan and Braveheart.
But wait, there’s more! This little ditty also plays CD’s and becomes an AM/FM radio as well! You don’t even need a stereo system anymore! I am aware that the Sony Home Theater System is unable to play “burned” CD’s, but that hasn’t affected my usage. I mention it because making your own CD’s might be something you enjoy and you should know this factor before considering a purchase.
The picture quality of the Sony DAV S300 DVD is crisp and clear. This could be the result of the aforementioned Sony Wega television. We purchased the two simultaneously, so I’ve never used the Home Theater with any other television. The clarity is better on a DVD than on a video or on regular cable.
Finally, the coup de gras: The Remote. This slim little gadget is attractive and modern. It is the same matte silver as the DVD and the Sony Wega and does everything you need it to do without having to get up. You can also flip up the top part and from here can control the television as well, eliminating the need for two separate remotes. Not to mention how cool you’ll look with a remote that flips up when you have your buddies over to watch Star Wars!
If you are looking for a great way to spend the $600 all of us married folk are getting back from the government next month, let this be at the top of your list. You will not be sorry, apartment or home.
