Great, with some reservations.

Pros: Simple set-up, uncluttered. Amazingly easy to use.
Cons: Not CD-R compatible. Proprietary Sony cabling.
The Bottom Line: If you don't bother with CD-Rs and want a good AM/FM/CD/DVD unit, this is a great choice.

| ralphintosh's Full Review: Sony DAV-S300 Theater System |
My wife and I got this unit to try to cut down on growing clutter in our entertainment center, and it worked -- to an extent.
The unit itself is small and simple to hook up, save Sony's proprietary plugs for the speakers. They make is simple to plug in -- each speaker placement is color-coded -- but if you already have wiring run or wish to use heavier grade speaker wire, you'll have to do some splicing.
My only complaint on the usefulness of the unit is that it can't play CD-Rs. I've tried a variety of media, but the S300 just does not like CD-Rs you create on your computer (I'm not talking MP3-encoded discs, I mean regular CD types). My $25 K-Mart portable can handle them, why can't Sony? My guess is that they engineered it out so as to add it in at a higher price -- kind of like what the phone company did years ago with Caller ID (they had to first figure out a way to block the ID signal prior to selling it as a "feature"). Ah, well.
All-in-all, a good starter home theater system. Plenty loud enough for all except the "I really hate my neighbor" types.
